In more recent years, social scientists have been puzzled by the more general phenomenon of rule-following, the fact that people often abide by social norms even when doing so produces undesirable consequences. Experimental game theorists have demonstrated conclusively that the old-fashioned picture of "economic man," constantly reoptimizing in order to maximize utility in all circumstances, cannot provide adequate foundations for a general theory of rational action. The dominant response, however, has been a slide toward irrationalism. If people are ignoring the consequences of their actions, it is claimed, it must be because they are making some sort of a mistake.

In Following the Rules, Joseph Heath attempts to reverse this trend, by showing how rule-following can be understood as an essential element of rational action. The first step involves showing how rational choice theory can be modified to incorporate deontic constraint as a feature of rational deliberation. The second involves disarming the suspicion that there is something mysterious or irrational about the psychological states underlying rule-following. According to Heath, human rationality is a by-product of the so-called "language upgrade" that we receive as a consequence of the development of specific social practices. As a result, certain constitutive features of our social environment-such as the rule-governed structure of social life-migrate inwards, and become constitutive features of our psychological faculties. This in turn explains why there is an indissoluble bond between practical rationality and deontic constraint.

In the end, what Heath offers is a naturalistic, evolutionary argument in favor of the traditional Kantian view that there is an internal connection between being a rational agent and feeling the force of one's moral obligations.

Such a shame that this will be read by almost no one..

I generally can't be bothered enough to write reviews and I'm sure, Mr. Heath doesn't need this kind of external validation to feel confident in the merits of his work; it just bugs me to no end that a gem like this is bound to remain in obscuration, read only by those who don't really matter..

From the layman on philosophy matters that I am, this title naturally required more attention and looking up of terminology and references than the popsci category of things, I've gone through in the past, but boy, it sure was that much worthier!

One of the main payoffs for me was that, even though the primary objective of the book is to articulate a convincing argument for the existence and persistence of the uniquely human normative tendencies, along the way of doing so, it brought a tremendous amount of food for thought (and expanded FOV) on such diverse topics as psychology, economics, social justice, nature of consciousness and AI development challenges.

As the review theme suggests, the one unfortunate side-effect, reading this book has is to make starker the contrast between this kind of discourse, brilliant elucidation and cut-through long standing philosophical arguments, and the common denominator public sphere conversation we're gradually forced to accept as normal. Still; easily the most satisfying and (I suspect) important non-fiction work I've read in a while.

Wonderful research on important topics in early childhood education, well presented!

Sometimes you pick up a book that you enjoyed in an earlier phase of your life to check whether it was really that good. In the case of "Preschool in Three Cultures" the situation is even more interesting in that we get to revisit the earlier book and its subject matter. It turns out that the earlier book was definitely that good and that revisiting the same subject matter is perhaps even better.

For the general public interested in childhood education, as well as for academic specialists in comparative and early childhood education, this is not only a very informative, but also a truly enjoyable read.

The book is particularly strong in the research methods that are brought to bear on important questions regarding early childhood education. To examine differences between early education in the U.S., China, and Japan, the authors videotaped a day in two preschools in each country and then showed these videos (in edited form) to teachers at the schools where the videos were shot to get their reaction to aspects of the video. In addition, the researchers also showed these videos to other educators in all three countries to get their reactions. These screenings also included the videos that formed the basis for the original research, published as Preschool in Three Cultures: Japan, China and the United States, adding a longitudinal comparison to the international one.

By showing concrete evidence of particular pedagogical strategies, the authors tease out reactions that tell the reader about perceptions of other countries' pedagogies, but by extension also about perspectives on early childhood education more generally.

Whereas one often hears that old chestnut about Japan being a Confucian society, Tobin, Hsueh, and Kawasawa were able to point to very concrete facets of early education to compare between the three countries. By the way, it turns out that there is very little that's obviously "Confucian" about Chinese or Japanese early education.

By describing the preschools themselves, but then also discussing the reactions of educators to the videos at great length, the authors skilfully draw us into their analysis and actually let readers do a lot of the analysis themselves. Not only is this admirable in terms of the openness of the method, but it gives readers a great opportunity to engage the research materials themselves and to learn a lot about comparative early education in the process.

As icing on the cake, the videos are actually available from the author (see [...]). For my part, I will be showing the videos to students in an undergraduate class on "Sociology of Education" and then discussing them before assigning parts of the book. I know that the students will enjoy the videos as well as the readings and that they will benefit greatly from their exposure to this research.

I became a fan of David We after reading his first book on Preschool in Three Cultures. At that time many people were fascinated and puzzled by Japan's economic success (as some still are). Any sociologist or business person planning to do business in Japan or China would be well advised to read the first and revisited versions.
It is rare that writers take such an openly critical look at the work they are doing. Videos of classroom activities are shown to the participants of the three countries involved for feedback and criticism thereby immensely increasing the diversity of opinion that only one onlooker might achieve. The Japanese are aghast at the severity of the Chinese classroom regimen initially but impressed after a passage of 20 years and phenomenal change in Chinese society. The Chinese are aghast at the lax attitude of the Japanese teachers, offering readers great insight into the decision making processes of both countries. It reveals much and I admire all those involved in delving into the originals of culture, social expectations and organization that these books reveal.

Great Followup to the Original!

The very interesting book provides a valuable update to the preschools of China, Japan, and the US. It details dramatic changes as well as enduring beliefs and practices 20 years later, reflecting the cultural and educational philosophies of each country. This is a wonderful vehicle for understanding how culture and the passage of time influence a country's preschools. I applaud Tobin, Hsueh, and Karasawa!

Hilarious and on the money!

I read this book in its original Italian (the English version is coming out in a few days) and I must say that Beppe Severgnini has made the most of his year in the US. Many of the things I noticed since moving to America have been captured in this book with rare and insightful humor. Beppe shows differences from how Italians view things (fear of air conditioning for Italians and love of it by Americans) but always with respect. Beppe si not making fun of Americans as much of highlighting how differences can not only be enriching, but funny altogether. I have since read just about every book he has written and strongly encourage anyone who loves humor to do the same.

Severgnini's funniest book to date! I bought the English version ("Ciao, America") and read the two side by side to improve my Italian comprehension. His description of America, through the eyes of an Italian, will have you laughing out loud -- and will give you some insight into the culture we take for granted here. A must-read!

Once there was a kid named Benjamin Franklin. Some called him Ben because it's shorter. He was a cool inventor. Some thought he was a good guy but others didn't. Once he wrote news papers and then at night slide them under the post office door. Then in the morning a person would give them to people to read. Finally he said it was him. Everyone people liked the idea but his brother James is disagreed with it. He thought that he should be the smartest in the family not Ben. When Ben was just 17 years old he ran away. He started to work when he arrived at his destination. Then he started to invent stuff. Some things he made were bifocals ( glasses ) , the Franklin Stove , and even started the first firefighter department. Eventually he came back home and was 81 years old.

If you have a rehabilitation background and need to understand statistics this is a great book. I bought this book as a supplement for my statistics class. It explains concepts so well! Our professor changed to this book the next year. All the OTs and PTs in my PhD program have bought this book. This is in my keep forever collection. Everyone in my department has the book and only loans it out with strict instructions for its return.
