About the Author

Nicolaas P. Pronk, PhD, is the vice president of health management at HealthPartners in Bloomington, Minnesota, the largest consumer-governed, nonprofit health care organization in the nation. He is also senior research investigator at HealthPartners Research Foundation and health science officer of JourneyWell, a Minneapolis-based nationwide provider of health and wellness programs.

Pronk has 20 years of experience in the health promotion field as a researcher, developer, and administrator of health promotion programs and services. Since 1993 he has directed health improvement initiatives that involve a systems approach to generating health across multiple sectors, including business and industry. He is a member of the distinguished Task Force on Community Preventive Services, an independent panel supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which presents evidence-based recommendations to the health field.

A member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) since 1984, Pronk served as section editor and contributor for the first edition of ACSM's Worksite Health Promotion Manual. He currently serves as associate editor for the ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal. He served as the chair for the ACSM Interest Group on Worksite Health Promotion until 2008, when it morphed into the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP), an ACSM affiliate society. Pronk is a founding member and inaugural president of the international board of directors for the IAWHP. Previously, he was a board member of the former Association for Worksite Health Promotion (AWHP).

Pronk and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Eagan, Minnesota. He enjoys spending time with his family and dogs, watching English Football Association soccer after a Saturday-morning run, and riding his Harley on country roads in the Minnesota northland.

A Must for the Worksite Health Professional

This is still a very important book for the library of the worksite HP or wellness professional. With 38 chapters organized under five different sections it provides the beginner to seasoned HP professional ideas, tips, and resources to design, implement, and sustain worksite HP programs. It is one of the books that I use the most, and sits within an arms distance in my office. The various chapter authors represent a "who's who" of health promotion and all experts. My only hope for the next edition is that it has more content for the HP or wellness practitioner that is at the ground level working on the daily task of sustaining programs.

I thought this would be a hands-on book on how to start a successful corporate wellness practice with case studies, financial planning, segmenting, market intelligence but didnt find any of it for the money that I spent on it.

About the Author
The late Azriel Rosenfeld was a tenured research professor, a distinguished university professor, and the Founding Director of the Center for Automation Research at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he also held affiliate professorships in the departments of computer science, electrical engineering, and psychology. Dr. Rosenfeld was widely regarded as the leading researcher in the world in the field of computer image analysis. Over a period of nearly 40 years, he made fundamental and pioneering contributions to nearly every area of that field. He wrote the first textbook in the field, was founding editor of its first journal, and was co-chairman of its first international conference. He published over 30 books and over 600 book chapters and journal articles, and directed nearly 60 Ph.D. dissertations. Dr. Rosenfeld's research on digital image analysis—specifically on digital geometry and topology and the accurate measurement of statistical features of digital images in the 1960s and 1970s—formed the foundation for a generation of industrial vision inspection systems that have found widespread applications from the automotive to the electronics industry. He was a Fellow of the IEEE and the Washington Academy of Sciences; a Founding Fellow of the AAAI, the ACM, and the IAPR. Among his numerous awards and honors are the IEEE's Emanuel Piore Award, its Third Millennium Medal, and its Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.

This is a historic book which helped define the field of image processing. It has clarity and it presents the basic issues in a superb manner. Although it is somewhat dated now, it will still be useful to those who wish to look at the historical development of the field.

Educational Testing & Measurement ~ Classroom Application & Practice was a required text for a college course, so I need the book for the class. Being able to purchase it loose leaf for on third of the price that the college book store was charged, saved me over $100. That is a serious discount just to get the book unbound & have to put it in a dollar binder to use. The text is identical to the bound version. This option to purchase a needed text in unbound format is great to stretch the college budget.

Can You Get Away with The Previous Edition?

To me, a book published in 2009 vs. 2013, with a price difference of a US penny vs. $150 begs the serious question of updates! In the case of this text, the authors have been very ethical in producing a substantial update, not just a new edition like a software text repeated as a "must" every 6 months to rip off students.

Which then brings us to the next question: how much has really changed in the last 4 years? First, for background, I've been in edu testing all my life, and I'm one of the founding directors at preptorial dot org, the free test prep databases; narrow, but relevant to this text. There are two sources for potential changes in measurement: government policy and technical research, which only matters in a book like this to the extent which ETS developers adopt that research.

On the first, it comes down to Bush vs. Obama with no child left behind vs. what was initially called "affordable college" and "teacher training." RTI, IDEA and other updates show that President Obama's derision of "teach to the test" vs. Bush hasn't really changed a lot of the way in which things are done in 2014 vs. 2009! I'm not making ANY political statement here, just trying to give you a foundation to decide on spending an extra $150! The REAL, subtle, lesser known changes in IDEA and RTI (and president Obama funded disabled education with 12 billion via ARRA in 09) are on the LEGAL side, and these are not covered as case precedent updates in this fine text (lessening the moving party persuasion burden on parents of disabled kids, for example, a traditional and confirmed decision effectively putting a burden on those parents in 2005, softened in 2013 with case precendent, for example).

What about more recent developments in the relationship of RTI to IDEA? Response to Intervention is controversial, and most of the relationships (in the legal system) were ironed out by 2007. So, for purposes of this book's added value, that is (temporarily) stable, and not a significant factor between editions. The details are, but those change monthly, so web/journal research would be needed with either edition. What about from an Obama/ in practice standpoint? The practical application comes down (to oversimplify) to balancing the trade off of labeling a child "disabled" vs. not responding with special ed or programs when needed. This tension has not changed between editions. Since (practically) this disproportionately affects minorities and the underprivileged (most public school teachers know this all too well and it is what I deal with daily at Preptorial), it is perhaps surprising that many of the funds that have been allocated in that general area have not really impacted the day to day in testing at this writing.

So, bottom line: First, this book is a MUST in one of the two editions. I completely disagree with folks who trash talk the authors because it is expensive, and then say it is "not worth it." You MUST know these materials if you teach, period. BUT: if you are willing to spend a few hours online brushing up on RTI, IDEA and some recent articles on educational testing, DO consider the previous edition. This comes down to your budget vs. how you value your time. If you have money, or access to it, DO get this edition, and save yourself time. If you're a student, or on a tight budget, or value scarce funds more than your time, DO get the previous edition and augment it with web updates. To be VERY honest, a child isn't going to get into Harvard without a good SAT score. I don't "advocate" this, it is just reality! I recently helped add a whole translated database of 50,000 questions to preptorial on PhD testing in China. From a planetary standpoint, testing is far from going away. In fact, in a broader sense, it is the essence of science, and has been proven in numerous fields (eg. early testing in software development) to be a must.

Excellent for references

I used this book for reference during my grad introduction to finance class. It was very helpful for whenever I needed to go back to some concept or definition. I never really read a full chapter, but as mentioned went directly to portions of the text. This worked perfect for me.

Needs a good editing

This is an exhaustive text on corporate finance; however, it is best used in conjunction with clear lectures. The exercises in the text can be quite challenging; however, there appear to be more than a few errors or inconsistencies between the text and Damodaran's helpful website. Trying to discern which version of a question and answer is correct can be a somewhat frustrating process. Unfortunately, these inconsistencies seem to persist even through new editions.

Patricia M. Cunningham is the author of Beyond Retelling, Classrooms That Work, Schools That Work, and Phonics They Use, all published by Allyn & Bacon, as well as a professor of education at Wake Forest University. She has over 30 years of experience in various elementary grades and with remedial reading and has served as a curriculum coordinator and director of reading. Pat promotes literacy for all children through her Four Blocks® workshops and staff development sessions with educators.

 

Dorothy P. Hall is the co-developer of the Four Blocks® framework and the director of the Four Blocks® Center at Wake Forest University. A former elementary teacher and education professor, she also presents workshops around the country on Four Blocks®, Building Blocks, guided reading strategies, and phonics instruction.

About the Author

Patricia M. Cunningham

The day I entered first grade, I decided I wanted to teach first grade. In 1965, I graduated from the University of Rhode Island and began my teaching career teaching first grade in Key West, Florida. For the next several years, I taught a variety of grades and worked as a curriculum coordinator and special reading teacher in Florida and Indiana.

 

From the very beginning, I worried about children who struggled learning to read and devised a variety of alternative strategies to teach them to read. In 1974, I received my Ph. D. in Reading Education from the University of Georgia. I developed the Making Words activity while working with Title One teachers in North Carolina where I was the Director of Reading for Alamance County Schools. I have been the Director of Elementary Education at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina since 1980 and have worked with numerous teachers to develop hands-on engaging ways to teach phonics and spelling. In 1991, I published Phonics they Use: Words for Reading and Writing, which is currently available in its fourth edition. Along with Richard Allington, I published Classrooms that Work and Schools that Work.

 

Dottie Hall and I have worked together on many projects. In 1989, we began developing the Four Blocks Framework, a comprehensive approach to literacy which is used in many schools in the United States and Canada. Dottie Hall and I have  worked together to produce many books, including the first Making Words books and the Month by Month Phonics Books. These Making Words by Grade Level books are in response to requests by teachers across the years to have making words lessons with a scope and sequence tailored to their grade level. We hope you and your students will enjoy these making words lessons and we would love to hear your comments and suggestions.

 

Dorothy P. Hall

I always wanted to teach young children too! After graduating from Worcester State College in Massachusetts I taught first and second grade. After two years, I moved to North Carolina where I continued teaching in the primary grades. Many children I worked with struggled to learn to read in the newly integrated schools. I wanted to learn more and received my M ED and Ed D in Reading from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

 

I also worked at Wake Forest University where I met and began to work with Pat Cunningham. After three years teaching at the college level I returned to the public schools and taught third and fourth grade as well being a reading and curriculum  coordinator for my school district. At this time Pat Cunningham and I began to collaborate on a number of projects. In 1989, we developed the Four Blocks Framework, a comprehensive approach to literacy in grades one, two, and three which we later expanded to kindergarten, calling it Building Blocks, and the upper grades, calling it Big Blocks. By 1999 Pat and I had written four Making Words books, a series of Month by Month Phonics Books, and The Teacher’s Guided to Four Blocks and I retired from the school system to devote more time to consulting and writing. I also went back to work at Wake Forest University where I taught courses in Reading, Children’s Literature, and Language Arts Instruction for elementary education students. I am now Director of the Four Blocks Center at Wake Forest University and enjoy working with teachers and administrators around the country presenting workshops on Four Blocks, Building Blocks, Guided Reading Strategies, and Phonics Instruction. I have also written several books with teachers. One request Pat and I have had for a number of years is to revise the Making Words by grade level and include a scope and sequence for the phonics instruction taught. Here it is–Enjoy!

Great for beginning 1st & remedial 2nd graders, too!

I'm a intervention specialist for kindergarten through 5th grade students that are performing below standard in reading. I use this book with my kindergarteners, first graders, and some select lessons for my 2nd graders. It's an awesome resource and has excellent advice for how to implement fun, physical activity, and meaningful word work into your literacy instruction. I highly recommend this for kindergarten, lower first and struggling second grade students! I plan on buying the other grade-level ones as well so I have plenty of these lessons at all my students' levels.

As a side note, I bought this although I already had, "Making Words, Grades 1 - 3," by Patricia Cunningham, Dorothy P. Hall and, Tom Heggie (ISBN-10: 0866538062). This book, unlike "Making Words, Grades 1 - 3," does not increase in difficulty at such a rapid rate. These lessons are geared to one grade level and will provide enough word work lessons to last the whole year in the same grade.

It was OK

Honestly, I felt this book was way pricey for what it was. The lessons are very basic and the letter cards you can make yourself on your own computer. The basic making words lessons you could truly come up with yourself seeing as they are word families, adding beginning or ending consonants. However, it does lay each lesson out for you so the thinking is done for you, and I do like the suggested read aloud books for each lesson. There are 50 lessons in the book, so that part is a plus.

The lessons are easy to follow, it has the academic resources to work with the children in a playful manner. But It would be great if they come in color in a cd to print. It suggests a great scope of books that match the patterns it teaches. It's an excellent piece of work but not the only one.
