This is a book to be judged by its cover, which boldly presents an outline of South America, its southern tip at the top of the page. This reversal of the cartographic convention is a demand for a new critical viewpoint on contemporary Latin American art. The writing asks us to go beyond the easy view of Latin American artists as creators of a colorful stew of magic realism. The 22 essays by Latin American art critics, most originally written in Spanish or Portuguese, examine feminism, multiculturalism, folk art, religious kitsch, governmental repression, and cultural identity. Although the focus of the book is on Spanish-speaking South and Central America, there are also discussions of Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Spanish-speaking communities of the United States. Yet these essays are by no means parochial examinations of purely local art; they are exceedingly well-written statements of universal interest written from the unique perspective of Latin America. Unfortunately, an appetite sharpened by the quality of the writing is not satisfied by the few illustrations, a loss for readers unfamiliar with the vast range of Latin American art. It is without doubt interesting and significant to note that although Latin American art has, in recent decades, gained growing recognition and distribution throughout the world, the texts by critics and theorists from Latin America have been given little international attention. These texts have appeared in isolated form in journals and exhibition catalogs, most often organized by European or North American curators. This means that outside the sub-continent Latin American art has in many cases not been transmitted by Latin Americans themselves. An external vision can without doubt offer some revealing insights, but in the case of this region, the vision is often too generalized, full of commonplaces or simply the product of a Eurocentric understanding of modernity.

It is to this point that the title of this anthology edited by Gerardo Mosquera refers. For the first time, the English-speaking public is offered a collection of major critical and theoretical essays which provide a multiple vision of this art �beyond the fantastic�.

In most of these texts, the art of Latin America is the starting point for theoretical analysis and
reflection, which make an essential contribution to our understanding of the complexity of contemporary art in general. Thus it cannot be over-emphasized that although this is criticism from Latin America, it is not only for Latin America. The book is important not only to the relatively small number of specialists in Latin American art.

Although in the �West� there is recognition of the increasingly polycentric development of the globalizing processes, not enough attention is being paid to the potential for innovation coming
from the supposedly �cultural peripheries�. Wolf Lepenies, Rector of the College of Science of Berlin, was quite right to say last year, in the presence of leading personalities from German economic scene, that European societies should leave aside the role of being �teaching� cultures and become �learning� cultures.

It is time to finally revise the obsolete structures of thought which pervade the international art debate - still dominated by a �central� point of view and its media machinery - in order to do justice to the complexity and growing interconnection of the art processes across the world. It can't be a matter of enlarging the Western building of thought with just some more rooms around its nucleous. The whole decaying edifice should be demolished and rebuilt in a new collective effort by all its participants.

Some progress in this direction would have been made if a book such as Beyond the Fantastic had been recognized not only as a regional study but as an important contribution to the general debate.

Gerardo Mosquera is a very influential and important art historian. Therefore, it is a really good idea to read ANYTHING he writes. I saw him speak at a university in Mexico DF and he is actually an amazing speaker. (it's much more FUN to hear him talk about his ideas in person...and in Spanish!)

Greg O'Connor is founder and chief instructor of Aikido Centers of New Jersey/Aikido Centers Inc. Dedicated to Aikido for over 30 years he is one of the few full-time professional Aikido teachers in the United States. He currently holds the rank of 6th Dan and certified through Aikido World Headquarters, Tokyo (Aikikai Hombu).

The Aikido Student Handbook

This is a straight forward, informative source of information
for those interested or newly started in the study of
Aikido. It details proper etiquette, procedure, and
explains many of the minor details of being an Aikidoka
(student) that your sensei may assume you already know.
O'Conner makes many good comparisons, and moves through the
rudimentary aspects of training in Aikido at a speed that
anyone can understand.

As a beginner in Aikido, I found the book helpful in demystifying some of the etiquette and language, as well as providing a good backround on the sport and some of the philosopy. I would recommend it to any beginner and expect that it will remain on the bookshelf as a reference to many of the terms used in Aikido.

About the Author

Markus Rupp was born in 1963 in V�lklingen, Germany. He received his Dipl.-Ing. Degree in 1988 at the University of Saarbr�cken, Germany, and his Dr.-Ing. degree in 1993 at the Technische Universit�t Darmstadt, Germany, where he worked with Eberhardt H�nsler on designing new algorithms for acoustic and electrical echo compensation. From November 1993 until July 1995, he held a postdoctoral position at the University of Santa Barbara, California, with Sanjit Mitra where he worked with Ali H. Sayed on a robustness description of adaptive filters with impact on neural networks and active noise control. From October 1995 until August 2001, he was a member of Technical Staff at the Wireless Technology Research Department of Bell-Labs in Crawford Hill, NJ, where he worked on various topics related to adaptive equalization and rapid implementation for IS-136, 802.11 and UMTS. In October 2001 he was appointed a Full Professor of Digital Signal Processing in Mobile Communications at the Technische Universit�t (TU) Wien, where he served as the Dean from 2005 to 2007 and from 2016 to 2017. He was associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing from 2002 to 2005�and is currently associate editor of JASP EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, and JES EURASIP Journal on Embedded Systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and was elected AdCom Member of EURASIP from 2004 to 2012, serving as President of EURASIP from 2009 to 2010. He has authored and co-authored more than 500 scientific papers, including 15 patents on adaptive filtering and wireless communications.

Stefan Schwarz was born in Neunkirchen, Austria, in 1984. He received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and his Dipl.-Ing. degree (M.Sc. equivalent) in telecommunications engineering with the highest distinctions in 2007 and 2009, respectively, both at TU Wien. He also received his Dr. techn. degree (Ph.D. equivalent) in telecommunications engineering� with the highest distinctions in 2013 at TU Wien. In 2010 he received the honorary prize of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research for outstanding graduates of scientific and artistic universities. In 2014 he received the INiTS Award in the category Information and Communication Technologies for innovative scientific works with potential economic applications. From 2008 to 2014 he worked as a project assistant in Prof. Markus Rupp’s Mobile Communications group at TU Wien’s Institute of Telecommunications, where he chiefly focused on link and system level simulation of Long-Term Evolution (LTE)/ Long-Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) networks and was one of the lead developers of the Vienna LTE Simulators. In 2012 he visited the University of Texas at Austin as a research scholar and collaborated with Prof. Robert W. Heath, Jr. on limited feedback algorithms for distributed antenna systems. Since 2015 he has been employed as postdoctoral researcher (university assistant) at the Institute of Telecommunications, leading a contract research project on Low Latency Group Communication over Long-Term Evolution Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (LTE MBMS). His research interests lie in the broad fields of wireless communications and signal processing.

Martin Taranetz was born in 1986 in Amstetten, Austria. He received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and his Dipl.-Ing degree (M.Sc. equivalent) in telecommunications engineering with the highest distinctions from the TU Wien, Vienna, Austria, in 2008 and 2011, respectively. He also received his Dr. techn. degree (Ph.D. equivalent) in telecommunications engineering with the highest honors from the TU Wien in 2015. In his dissertation, he focused on the system level modeling and evaluation of heterogeneous cellular networks. Since 2015, he has been employed as a project assistant in the Mobile Communications group at TU Wien’s Institute of Telecommunications. From January 2014 to April 2014 he was a visiting researcher with the Wireless Networking and Communications Group at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests lie in the broad fields of wireless communications and signal processing. He is a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing.�
