LUCKY... OR BLESSED?

The history of the United States displays an uncanny pattern: At moments of crisis, when the odds against success seem overwhelming and disaster looks imminent, fate intervenes to provide deliverance and progress. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes, or the product of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the past four hundred years have identified this good fortune as something else—a reflection of divine providence.

In The American Miracle, bestselling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness.

Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here:

• A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival

• George Washington’s beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather

• A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States

• A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy’s secret battle plans—a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he’s awaited in order to free the slaves

When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved’s sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as “fortune’s favorite,” shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

Review
“Absolutely spectacular. This book is must-reading for anyone not yet fully convinced that God’s hand has been on America from the very beginning. The stories in it are genuinely staggering, fascinating, eye-opening, and deeply inspiring. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!”
—Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer and If You Can Keep It

“Whether it was God or the gods, some crucial moments in American history have turned on providential events that defy rational explanation.  Medved has a keen eye for such semi-supernatural stories, and tells them with his customary clarity.”
—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner; Author of Founding Brothers

“Michael Medved does a beautiful job of piecing together the most providential parts of our history—from the story of “indestructible” George Washington to “the miracle of Lincoln.” And I can’t help but agree with his argument: To believe America is exceptional is simply to be grateful for what God has given us.”
—Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

“Michael Medved's wonderful new book makes a compelling case for two beliefs that many of us hold dear—that God's hand is in history, and that America is a divinely favored country. Given the dark mood of the moment, The American Miracle could not be more timely.”
—Joseph I. Lieberman, former U.S. Senator from Connecticut; Democratic nominee for Vice President

“Without denying the difficulties our nation faces, Medved reminds us that we have faced problems in the past and endured because of our national ideals, and that the same principles that have driven American exceptionalism in the past can help light the way out of our present darkness. Read this book to renew your hope in America.”
—Dr. Arthur C. Brooks, president of American Enterprise Institute; author of The Conservative Heart

"This is a brisk, joyous romp through some of the most critical providential moments that made America an exceptional nation, told by a Yale-trained historian… who writes with brio and conviction.”
—Karl Rove, Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush

“If you love reading American history, or any history written like a page-turning novel… or just love great writing—the artistry of words that often read more like poetry than prose —you will love this book.  The fact that Michael Medved gives the reader all of these makes this a must read.”
—Lanny J. Davis, former Special Counsel to President Clinton; author of Truth to Tell

“Michael Medved has written an engaging, affectionate and historically compelling book about America…The American Miracle is a source of knowledge, a source of comfort, a source of inspiration. After reading it you’ll know America better, and treasure her more.”
—Peter Wehner, White House aide to Presidents George Bush and George W. Bush; Senior Fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center

“Michael Medved has written a timely study of the centrality of faith and providence in the American story, challenging Americans to reaffirm the religious ideals on which their nation was founded. Read it and be inspired.”
—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth; author of Not in God's Name

"Michael Medved chronicles in intriguing detail how America's unlikely founding and enduring success can't be explained by luck or coincidence, but only one thing: divine providence. After reading this book, even the toughest skeptics will be hard pressed not to believe that God had a role in America’s fortune."
—Bill Bennett, Secretary of Education under President Reagan; author of America: The Last Best Hope

"Medved speaks truth boldly and reasons carefully... and he is also a most gifted writer. In The American Miracle he reminds us that there once was a day when Americans knew the history of our country as a story of promise and providence, and he is confident that Americans can learn that story again."
—R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“Even readers well versed in American history will enjoy his account of the random coincidences and quirks of fate that lead to the founding of the Republic of Texas and the annexation of California…[a] fascinating and provocative book.”
—Commentary

The Rest of the History
By Avid Reader
An outstanding book, replete with history that was not taught 50 years ago when I was in school. It is difficult to read it and not see that the rise of the Republic had an element of design which relied on powers far beyond human control to implement.I was especially taken with the story of Nicholas Trist who illegally negotiated the treaty with Mexico, signed little more than a week after gold was discovered there.

A Gift to America
By Mark Clayson
The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic is a great read. Well-told and well-researched. I learned much more than I expected in an area I was already somewhat familiar. It will give anyone a much greater appreciation of how rare and precious the heritage of this great nation is. And it will bolster anyone's faith in an age where faith is struggling. It is more of a stretch of faith to believe it was anything but a miracle.

Divine Providence Indeed
By Big Daddy
Just as God commanded Joshua to have the Israelites build a pile of rocks to remember what he had done for him, The American Miracle is a metaphorical pile of rocks, reminding the reader of how divine providence played a role in building this nation and how those truths are now being ignored and undermined by those who do not want the truth to be known.

This book brings to life many of the stories of divine providence that have either been forgotten or are simply ignored in the regular history books. I enjoyed history as a student, but many of the things in this book were just ignored in history class. It's an interesting read. You will learn from it and will be amazed and encouraged by parts of it.

The Diver and the Little Girl: and a pot of hot milk, by Philip James Kirke

The original parable of the merchant and the pearl appears deceptively simple: A pearl trader unexpectedly discovers the greatest and most beautiful pearl of all and sells everything he owns in order to purchase this one thing. But in this book, that story (originally told in just two sentences) is expanded out to a full novel which explores the paradoxically devastating and wonderful journey to enlightenment. Does the goal really have to be so costly? And what exactly IS the pearl of the parable? ... A pearl trader must leave his twin daughters for his dangerous work and fails to return. The story (as recalled by one of the girls) is told by the father on the eve of his fateful departure, as an explanation to his young daughters as to why he has to go away. It is an encoded mystery, fantastic, surreal, moving and challenging. Meet the original diver and the little girl. And wonder at the pearl. The multi dimensional subtlety and poetry of the Gallilean master's own original teachings has been largely ignored. Is it now time for a deeper more subtle map of inner transformation? Have we not been playing in the shallows for far too long?

An easy to follow and informative book for anyone interested in the Asian game of GO.
By Joseph J. Truncale
I recently became interested in an Asian game of strategy and purchased a GO game. Even though it had a small booklet explaining the game; nevertheless I decided to purchase a few more books on this game. I just looked through this 216 page soft cover (Teach Yourself GO by Charles Mathews) book and found the beginning instructions very clear and straight forward.

This very informative book provides a comprehensive introduction to the game of GO. The following is a small sample of the lessons in this book: The first five lessons for the beginner, five further lessons, capture, cutting and connecting, eyes, a complete game, Ko and seki, the end of the game, corners and sides. I found the last section very helpful which covers the origins and other information about the game of GO.

In conclusion I found this book very informative but like any complex game, there is nothing like actually playing the game with someone who has hands-on experience and can point out the finer details.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective combative systems).

Great book - but is it the right one for you? (4,5 stars)
By Marius
Teach yourself Go is a nice little book that will teach you a lot with its 200 pages. I knew some Go before I started reading this book, and I think that a complete beginner may find Janice Kim's books (Learn to play Go) a bit easier to learn from. With that said, this book is still a great book to start with even if you don't know anything about Go. It's just a bit harder to read, but it also contains twice as much information as the books Janice Kim writes. Teach yourself Go covers all you need to know about Go, from rules to simple strategy, and a bit more. I felt the book was hard to read, maybe due to the layout, and that the book itself is filled with tons of info. This is a book that takes time to read. Reading isn't everything either, so you have to digest what you read, play Go, and try it all out. If you just rush trough the book, you won't get out all its potential. If you invest some time in the book, you will be rewarded. I find some of the words used in the book to be too advanced. There must be easier words to use. This might not be a problem if your english skills are a bit better than mine, and maybe you really have to use words like this to make a good explanation. Some of the sentences are also a bit awkward. After each chapter you will be met by some Go problems that will check that you understood everything in the chapter. These Go problems can be a bit tough, and some of them are actually quite hard :) On the other side, you might become strong ;)

Good information, but mixed thoughts...
By Patrick Smith
At first I really didn't care for this book; even now I feel strangely towards it. However, although I diffinately do not think this is a good intro book (check out the great series by Janice Kim!), I do find that as I have questions arise I can often find answers here. For example, in her second volume Janice Kim talks about different ways of extending or enclosing and refers to certain methods as stronger than others - but my constantly inquiring mind needs to know why and painful detail so that it will seep in! Here Matthews succeeds. He gives several examples of why it is strong and how an attempt to invade can be thwarted. Still, I always open this book with a certain amount of dread. Whereas it does start in a somewhat friendly way and Matthews enthusiasism does seep through, as it progresses it gets a bit dull and dense. It gives me a similar dread to chess books filled with nothing but endless reams of variations. I gave it 4 stars because there is no 3.5 on amazon, and it really does have good information at a very reasonable price. I guess in the end, I agree with another reviewer that this is probably best suited as a "second Go book". It does serve as an informative primer into the depths of Go.

The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy's instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through Gaea's forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors from both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape? They have no choice. If the demigods don't succeed, Gaea's armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus. This paperback edition will include a never-before-seen short story, "The Crown of Ptolemy," in which Percy and Annabeth fight alongside Carter and Sadie Kane, and more bonus content!

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Fans won't be disappointed as the cliff-hanger ending from the previous book, The Mark of Athena (Hyperion, 2012), leads to further exciting adventures by the intrepid demigods in this penultimate book in the "Heroes of Olympus" series. Annabeth and Percy have fallen down into Tantarus, and they must fight off the attacks from the monsters stuck there long enough to find the Doors of Death. The other five demigods must get to Eprius in Greece, find the House of Hades to open the Doors of Death on the mortal side, save Annabeth and Percy, and seal the entrance to stop Gaea's forces from escaping into the mortal world and destroying it. The Gods are incapacitated by their Greek and Roman personalities warring with one another, and the demigods from Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter are on the verge of an all-out war. As Annabeth and Percy struggle to survive Tantarus's poisonous atmosphere and creatures, the other demigods must undergo harsh trials-particularly Hazel, Frank, and Leo, but they learn and grow mentally and physically from their experiences. The heroes realize that they cannot change their parentage but they can control their legacy. While more serious than the previous titles, there are lighthearted moments here, many involving a farting polecat. The horrifying monsters are nicely balanced by peace-loving Titan Bob, a skeleton calico cat called Small Bob, and gentle giant Damasen. Fans will be thrilled to know the series continues with The Blood of Olympus in 2014.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

From Booklist
For Percy Jackson fans, it’s been a long year since the cliffhanger at the end of The Mark of Athena (2012). Now Riordan picks up the story and carries it to a rewarding conclusion, with the main set of characters reunited and preparing themselves for the final showdown with Gaea. Throughout the book, Percy and Annabeth make their harrowing way through the underworld to the Doors of Death. Meanwhile, Hazel, Leo, Frank, Piper, Jason, Nico, and Reyna endure their own perils, all the way through to the story’s climax. In addition to experiencing growth spurts, several of the teen demigods take significant steps toward understanding their powers, accepting their feelings, trusting each other, and taking responsibility for leadership. Adventure fans will relish the action as their heroes confront formidable foes, while readers who have come to love the characters will enjoy following the different individuals as they take the stage in scenes that are usually dramatic, often witty, and occasionally surprising. A satisfying, penultimate entry in the Heroes of Olympus series. Grades 6-9. --Carolyn Phelan

Great, quick read! Recommend for all ages!
By John Nam
I read this book as a college student and loved it. Being meant for young adults, the writing is pretty easy which makes it a quick read. However, the story is great! I've always enjoyed Greek mythology from my youth and was stoked when the the original Percy Jackson series came out. I personally enjoy this second series more because it includes both Roman and Greek mythology.
One of my favorite parts about this series is that there is an Asian character as one of the main characters. He's not the stereotypical, nerdy Asian. He's a complete boss with awesome powers. He is so awesome that he is given a huge weakness to make things fair for the others.
Most fictional books I have read very rarely incorporate races other than white as the main characters. Even if they are, they are often side, very minimal characters to the point where they can be killed off. (Except for Minho in the maze runner! Which is another interesting read btw). Here we have, Leo Valdez (Hispanic), Frank Zhang (Canadian/Chinese), and Hazel Levesque (African American). None of them die! They are all super important characters and each have a unique personality that many young adults can relate to.
Overall, I think this is a great book which is a part of a great series! I look forward to more of Riordans work!

Wonderfully Written
By lc
My son and I both are reading this series. We have enjoyed following Percy Jackson and his friends from the beginning. Rick Riordan does a fabulous job in his writing. I imagine it's a little more difficult keeping a younger mind's attention, but his style is funny and humorous and reads just the way my son sounds when he describes his crazy ideas. I mostly read it to make sure that my son's book reports are accurate, but I do find myself wanting to know what's going to happen next in Percy's life. I think we will both be sad when Percy's story ends.

Dear Bob
By monchari
I think this is the best book in this Heroes of Olympus series so far.
All emotions, all tension , (almost) all expectations and thrills and drama are included in this one.
I almost forgot to breathe myself.
The story took you to the peak position and keep you there, it's really wonderful.

Since My favourite character always be Percy, I'm so thrilled that he had a chance to take a tour in Tartarus..(^_-)-☆
Because after all, he had already met and negotiated and fight with nearly most of the gods and Titans on the land, I thought it must be a good experience for him to challenge the big boss of Tartarus to enhance his power, and utilize it when the time comes.
All the chapters about his and Annabeth in Tartarus journey were so good.

And I'm so glad I had a chance to meet Bob, Small Bob and Damasen.
Especially Bob.
He was so sweet, so gentle and a very wonderful character.
His word 'say hello to the stars for me' was so powerful it still makes my eyes full of tears and squeeze my chest so tightly every time I thought about this book, even after more than a month since I finished it.

You will love Bob and small Bob so dearly, I guarantee you.

Anyway, cause I wrote this review after I finished all the books in this series, and because this 4th book is really great as I told you, I don't know whether I should make some caution for you to not expecting much for the next (final) book or not.

Of course, you've come this far you should finish it for good, but some times I wondered it might be better if I had stopped reading at this book and let my imagination end the series.
Especially if you are Percy Jackson's fan like me.

“…excellent coverage of the primary premise in clinical/(health) psychology that health conditions are largely behavior-associated, or a result of poor lifestyle choices. Good health is the result of careful planning and implementation of beneficial behaviors/practices.” ―Dr. Lisa Schneiter, Jefferson Community College Behavioral Epidemiology: Principles and Applications is the first of its kind to bring together the disciplines of the social/behavioral sciences and epidemiology. The text reviews how we study health in relation to behaviors, the complexities of such studies, ways to minimize these complexities, and how to use this knowledge to prevent and control disease in human populations. By combining these disciplines, this book provides a foundation for students and researchers in the methods used to study behavior, drawing upon mutually successful methods, and discussing what to do when these disciplines overlap or interact. This text is ideal for master’s level or early doctoral graduate students in the behavioral sciences, epidemiology, or public health, as well as researchers from other fields interested in an introduction to population-based research of behavior and health.
