Bite me!

I made the mistake of taking my Kindle with me when I went fishing yesterday. This was my choice read, and probably not the best idea I have ever had! I enjoyed Viktor's other book Jurassic Island. This guy knows how to write monster thrillers! There is all sorts going on as a ragtag group of people investigate the mysterious increase in deaths amongst sperm whales. They soon discover that the real reason for the increase in what turns out to be a great fun, bloody and a fast paced deep sea thriller. 4 stars.

Dont read while on the water!

I may biased about this book due to my love for all things shark related, but this was a very well put together novel. Perhaps a little better proofreading was needed, but I can over look that on the count of this being top notch. The action and suspense were in good supply, and you never really knew who would make it out alive. A pleasant read and we'll worth checking out.

Good fast paced story. Very suspenseful will make you not want to stop reading. Only thing thing I didn't like was the size of the megs mouth which was unrealistic baced on what I know about megs.

What a treasure found! Luckily I purchased Under the Sea Wind, prior to sailing my small boat to an equally small atoll. This book gives the reader an appreciation and understanding of life around the sea. More importantly, it increased my situational awarenes to gleen some of the Ocean's less obvious life. Upon making landfall at Palmyra Atoll, I was more able to see the life occuring before me. This book would be of value to any cruising sailor, hiker, or motorhome wanderer. This book makes an excellent gift to the homebound and undermotivated friends. It is superbly written by one of the finest writers of this century and children love it's flowing pace of words. Perhaps the best advice is to read this fine work, next to that buy a copy for a friend.

This is a very unusual nature book. Most nature books are based on first-hand experience and observations (e.g. see Henry David Thoreau, Edward Abbey, Robert Finch's books). While Rachel Carson certainly studied and observed the animals she describes in this book, she did not dive under the sea, thus a lot of the narrative is based on imagination (educated imagination, no doubt). The personification of the animals -- to give them human names and describe their feelings -- is also very unique in nature books. Nonetheless, these do not detract from the scientific accuracies of Carson's descriptions. As an literary book, these in fact make the book very much more readable. Reading it is like watching a Discovery channel documentary.

I deduct one star not because of the book itself, but because of this Penguin edition. I believe there is another edition of the book with illustrations by Bob Hines, I think those illustrations are fantastic. This book contains the illustrations by Howard Frech, the same as the first edition. These illustrations are fine, but there are very few of them (I am not sure if the Penguin edition even includes all of the original Frech works). The edition with Bob Hines' illustrations are infinitely more fun to read, why did Penguin not use those? Actually, why not use both??

A day in the natural seaside habitat

In this, her first book, pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson takes specific types of animals and gives them enough personality and character to tell a story about them, as they go about a normal part of a day in their natural seaside habitat. Each of the chapters takes a look at a part of the land-meets-ocean ecosystem to depict wildlife interaction in a way that reflects actual settings and animal behavior.

Written in a present tense, moment by moment style that is engaging, the prose seems effortless. Carson is undoubtedly an expert when it comes to the flora and fauna of the kinds of outer banks islands along the Atlantic Coast of the United States, and most of the readers who have vacationed anywhere from New Jersey to Florida will recognize many of the species she depicts. The narrative style allows Carson to inform as well as entertain her readers, with many fascinating facts about the birds, fish and other wildlife.

I read this book while on one of the North Carolina islands, and found it fitting that the shore birds I enjoyed watching in flight or along the beach were portrayed in such detail. Yet, for me, there was a bit too much of "and the next moment, animal A ate animal B, and then at once, animal A was eaten by animal C". After the first three chapters of this sort of thing, I became a bit tired of the relentless repetition of the survival of the fittest approach Carson takes throughout the book.

"Under the Sea Wind" received very good reviews in its first edition, but it sold poorly. After Carson's "The Sea Around Us" (1951) succeeded, "Under the Sea-Wind" was republished and gained a larger readership.

Rachel Louise Carson was born near Springdale, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 1907 and lived until April 14, 1964. She was a marine biologist and nature writer, whose books were instrumental in advancing global environmental awareness. Her best known book is "Silent Spring".

wow. A little peek into the mind of Jim Morrison. I have had this near my bed all year and pick it up from time to time and always find I can read the same poems over and over but find a new perspective each time. If you're a Doors fan or you're curious about the more in depth personal side of Jim Morrison, this is a good purchase.

Eternal and Powerfully Visionary

I think that Jim Morrison had an approach to poetry that was not unlike the ancient Oriental method described by Wei T'ai in the 11th century; "Poetry presents the thing in order to covey the feeling. It should be precise about the thing and reticent about the feeling, for as soon as the mind responds and connects with the thing the feeling shows in words; this is how poetry enters deeply into us. If the poet presents directly feelings which overwhelm him, and keeps nothing back to linger as an aftertaste, he stirs us superficially; he cannot start the hands and feet involuntarily waving and tapping in time, far less strengthen morality and refine culture, set heaven and earth in motion and call up spirits!"

Morrison mentions this of poetry in an interview; "Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through any one that suits you.. . . and that's why poetry appeals to me so much - because it's so eternal. As long as there are people, they can remember words and combinations of words. Nothing else can survive a holocaust but poetry and songs. No one can remember an entire novel. No one can describe a film, a piece of sculpture, a painting, but so long as there are human beings, songs and poetry can continue.
If my poetry aims to achieve anything, It's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel."

Morrison has remained an influence on my work for over 20 years now-I remember classes in Graduate school in which his poems or name would come up and it was always in a disregarding fashion, yet his books of poetry have been among the highest sellers of all time in that genre (and continue to be). Morrison was Blakean in poetic sensibility and Nietzschian in philosophy which is a terrifying combination if you think about it-he sought to be rid of the 'Mind Forged Manacles' that Blake spoke of and also desired a 'World as a will to power and nothing more' as Nietzsche mentions.
There is something of the eternal and the powerfully visionary about Morrison's work that remains- he was and also is a controversial figure, a poet that attempted to re-create the theater of Artaud in a way that would inform later performers like Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson. I think that Morrison's contribution to modern poetry was much more significant than he is currently being given credit for in the Academy.

That was the basis of my friendship and brotherhood with him,-I know of no better poet of Jim's generation. Was there ever a musician with more personal demons or such deep thoughts about this life because Jim Morrison is that and more. This books lets you into his mind and if you are like me you love the doors and have read other bios on jim, but to read his words that he never recorded...well that is the cherry on top.

Well-written chronicle of the 1929 Wall Street crash; and the key figures and investments that contributed to the market's collapse. JKG's laconic humor makes the book a delightful read.

Excellent, but scary

John Kenneth Galbraith's book on The Great Crash in 1929 is a short and vivid story about the causes leading to the stock market crash in October 1929. Reading it in February 2009, it is like a horror story. The description of the boom years, from 1925 to 1929, are very similar to today. Then people bought stocks on the margin, now they got houses. A main investment object was securitized stock loans, today it was CDOs bases on mortgages. Then, as now, capital was flowing to the US from the whole world to take part in the boom.

Galbraith also spend some space to discuss why this particular crash led to The Great Depression, while most crashes don't get us into anything like that. That part is also very scary, 54 years after the writing. He claims that income distribution in 1929 was partly responsible. Today, it is almost as uneven. The credit and banking system was distorted in pretty much the same way as today. And the current account ran a deficit (however, far smaller than today).

There is consolation in two important differences. The US is no longer on gold standard. That will probably prevent the devastating and long-lasting deflation from the Great Depression. And balanced budgets are not the holy grail of public finances, as it were in the 1930s (including under president Roosevelt).

To anyone with the slightest interest of the mechanisms of booms and busts, I will recommend Galbraith's excellent work. There are naturally simplifications and political biases, but in a couple of hours reading, he offers a lot of understanding.

Essential, Elegant Book on The Great Depression

Author John Gailbreath's extraordinary book on The Great Depression is a fascinating read for both the occasional reader who simply wants to know more about a period in which Americans struggled mightily to lift themselves from an extremely difficult economic collapse - and for the professional in any economic/financial field (who should consider it required reading!) Lucid, brilliant, sometimes wryly funny, always accurate, it is one of Nobel Prize-winning Gailbreath's finest works. DO GET IT -- you won't be sorry, and you will get more than a glimpse on economic bubbles-and-bursts (and their sad aftermaths) -- as well as why these are apt to keep occuring as long as men choose to speculate in markets...! YES, I'll read it again, before shelving it carefully for later browsing. A great buy from a superb vendor!

I expected a more engaging read

As is the case with many of Rita's works, they tend to border on pedantic and dry written material that doesn't truly engage the reader in the project. After a somewhat tedious read of the work, I felt it lacked much of the insight that I would have expected from something for which I paid the full price. Though that price has reduced greatly from $69, for a 336 page book, I'm not of the belief that the information contained is all that groundbreaking, nor worth $43 as of this writing.

If you're reading this because of a PMP recertification requirement under Category 2-SDL, it fulfills that requirement in a rather dry and disengaged manner. Cheap route to 15 PDU's? Yes, though there are many that are even cheaper. Meaningful and worthwhile? I felt it lacking, and laborious.
