I am not trying for a baby, but my friend is...

I'm not 'trying' for a baby as I became a parent over 17 years ago, but I distinctly remember how difficult it was and all the hurdles I had to overcome before I hit lucky, so it was with this memory that I read this book.

I'm not mad on 'A-Z' books and have read a few over the last 2 months. I don't really like the format and prefer a decent index...however, the subject matter has obviously been well thought-out and Genevieve has made a decent attempt at combining practical suggestions and simple tips.

You won't leap out of bed having read this, inspired to 'get pregnant' but you will feel less frazzled at all the worries and drawbacks at being someone-who-hasn't-hit-lucky-yet.

I gave it to a friend who's 'trying' and as it didn't come back ASAP I can only assume she's enjoying reading it!

Wavelet theory originated from research activities in many areas of science and engineering. As a result, it finds applications in a wide range of practical problems. Wavelet techniques are specifically suited for nonstationary signals for which classic Fourier methods are ineffective. Developments over the last decade have led to many new wavelet applications such as image compression, turbulence, human vision, radar, and earthquake prediction.

Based on courses taught by the authors at Texas A&M University as well as related conferences, Fundamentals of Wavelets is a textbook offering an up-to-date engineering approach to wavelet theory. It balances a discussion of wavelet theory and algorithms with its far-ranging practical applications in signal processing, image processing, geophysical applications, electromagnetic wave scattering, and boundary value problems.

About the Author

Jaideva C. Goswami, PhD, is an Engineering Advisor at Schlumberger in Sugarland, Texas. He is also a former professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Dr. Goswami has taught several short courses on wavelets and contributed to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering as well as Wiley Encyclopedia of RF and Microwave Engineering. He has many research papers and patents to his credit, and is a Fellow of IEEE.

Andrew K. Chan, PhD, is on the faculty of Texas A&M University and is the coauthor of Wavelets in a Box and Wavelet Toolware. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE.

Surely a good fundamental book on the subjet

I have been studying in this field for over five years now, and I find the book very comprehensive and fundamental. Compared to most of the popular books on Wavelet analysis, this book touches the subject from its root, and answering some basic questions like what is a wavelet, what is its origin, and how is it is useful for performing Time Scale signal analysis. The best part that I find is that the book perfectly balances a mathematician perspective of the subject matter with that of an Engineer's viewpoint. The reader will find lots of examples, MATLAB codes, illustration and exercises, which are hard to find in other books. The authors have presented the material with a sound theoretical foundation with lots of clearly presented definitions and theorems. The book also introduces a wide range of applications in the field of Signal and Image analysis, data compression, Seismic analysis, etc.

This book has been carefully crafted as opposed to one of those collections of journal articles that just fills in concepts, without explaining them clearly. I would strongly suggest this book for the beginners as well as intermediate level students.

Good idea; too bad about the errors

The book is in general a good idea but has a fatal flaw - it has many math errors. It looks as if the authors took their lectures on signal theory and shoved them into a wavelet context, without stopping to consider what needs changing. It seems every two pages or so is a significant error. This would be ok *if* there were a published errata, but I have found none via google. What good is a book full of errors?

I have a copy of this book, and I enjoyed reading it. I think, the material is given in a very clear and instructive way: important things are explained in great detail, and the exercises are very useful. This book would be very good for self study, and also as an addition to any other textbook on this subject.

Fun and thought provoking

I first discovered Chamfort in a little bookstore in Quebec city back in the 1970s and, even though I had never heard of him before (in spite of being a French major in college), I took a chance and bought the "Maximes." I did not regret the choice. There a few authors to whom I return year after year: Chamfort is among those select few authors. I find his style concise; his wit mordant and his observations on politics, religion and human nature profoundly perspicacious. Take the time to walk through some of the aristocratic salons and palaces of Ancien Regime France and you'll not regret it. He will show you the royal princess at Versailles who, finding that her commoner maid had ten fingers (the exact number that she- a royal princess- also had), commanded the maid to hold out her hands a second time so that she could re-count the number of fingers "to assure herself" that she had counted correctly. Biting in its wit- most assuredly- but also a thought provoking and profound observation about the abyss that separates social classes under autocratic and hierarchical regimes.

Although he may not ever be judged by the critics or academics to have the intellectual weight of a Diderot or the wit of of a Voltaire, I think you'll agree that he deserves a place in any 18th century reading-list.

Good book for novice WAS users

This is a very good book for WAS beginners. It is much smaller than the official WAS RedBook, but it will guide you through the most important administrative concepts of WAS8. Unfortunately it lacks the Network Deployment capabilities (like clustering, HA or CIM) and there are some weak points in the book (see below) but it has a lot of valuable hints and is very easy and fast to read.

The strong sides of the book

- Easy and fast to read
- Excellent for people new to WAS
- Great hints from a person who professionally works with WAS from many years
- Nice examples with sample code and scripts available to download

The book weaknesses

- Administration of only standalone WAS installations (Network Deployment is not covered)
- Unfortunately the part about applying fixpacks in chapter 11 is not valid for WAS version 8
- Part about HTTP server also could be updated to version 8 in chapter 9

One of the more complete WAS administration books

I've been administering WebSphere Application Server for about 6 years beginning with WAS 6.0 and migrating through WAS 6.1 and WAS 7.0. I've not yet implemented WAS 8.0, so I was excited about reading this book to see what had changed.
Over the course of the time I've been doing administration, I've looked for a good book covering the current version of WAS. During the WAS 6.0/1 era, there were very few administration books out there that were current: they were mostly aimed at WAS 5.11 which was VERY different from WAS 6.0. During the WAS 7.0 timeframe, there were a number of administration guides out there from several publishers. While they were generally good, they usually seemed to lack something fairly major. Of course there's always the official manuals (something like 7 books and a couple of thousand pages) as well as the IBM RedBooks (free, but often very focused to allow a deep dive into a specific topic).
That being said, this book seems to do a very good job of covering the breadth of the product with one exception. As others have pointed out, it doesn't really cover the Network Deployment edition although it does touch on some of the features and some of the ways that it differs from the other products. This is not an oversight on the author's part as the following quote points out: "Scope is very important for the WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment (WAS ND) product, which is not covered in this book."
I would highly recommend this book for someone who's either new to the product, or someone who wants to see what has changed since previous versions of the product. It is very well written and seems to be fairly complete from a feature standpoint other than the intentional ND omission.

Excellent Book

Steve Robinson has done an excellent work in writing this book. I found it very interesting to read as a system administrator whose application portfolio includes WebSphere application server. This book is full of practical examples and very well and clearly explained. I did also like the accuracy of the practical examples because the results were similarity what Steve indicated in the book. The only caveat I found was that some links didn't work especially the link for the repository to download the WebSphere application server. This is however expected as IBM links change all the time. I have recommended this book to a few other administrators, some who have bought it. I will continue recommending it as a must read for WebSphere administrators.

Great introduction to the topic

An excellent book on lighting design. I am outsider to the field, so I can't really address the accuracy of everything that is said. But in terms of scope it covers all the bases. I found that I tended to "dip" into sections that discussed things I didn't know much about, and skip others. This book is just as useful ether way. Lighting design is both a science and an art, and I would have appreciated reading more about the intuitive aspects of lighting that arise out of years of experience. I would also have likes to see more case studies. But maybe that is content for others to write about. As a starting foundational core of the topic, this book is excellent.

Great guide lighting maintenance workers.

I do electrical maintenance which includes a lot of working with lighting circuits. This book has been a huge help on understanding the fundamentals of lighting, types of fixures and bulbs, and an overall view of the industry. Granted, it's not going to tell you absolutely everything...it does do the job for the size of the book.
