About the Author
Stephen Marshak is Professor of Geology and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. from Cornell University. He has served as Chair of the Division of Structural Geology and Tectonics of the Geological Society of America. Dr. Marshak has written numerous research articles on topics in structural geology and tectonics, and has authored or co-authored four books: Basic Methods of Structural Geology; Earth Structure, Earth: Portrait of a Planet; and Essentials of Geology.

The best of geology

This book is indeed the best introduction to geology you can ever get. It has the most fundamental knowlegde and at the same time it includes a higher level. So it is for all people with an interest in geology. If you are a student and even if you are a normal person with great interest this book will become your favorite. It combins beautyful pictures with nice drawings and great text. It gives a good picture of what it is like to be a geologist and what the work includes.

Simply: you get the best of geology!! Injoy:o)

New Revised Edition Is Even Better

The sub-title 'Portrait of a Planet' gives you some idea of what this book is all about. It is almost a coffee table picture book, filled with photographs of the earth. Yet at the same time its first edition became the text book of choice at over 300 colleges and universities around the world.

This is the brand new second edition. The new edition has taken comments about the previous edition, integrated them with the results of recent discoveries and more examples, photographs, art work, and text to make the second edition even better. Each chapter of the first edition was sent to an expert reviewer (a world leader on that particular subject) for comment.

The biggest change in the new edition is to stress plate tectonics earlier and stronger to provide the underlying theory that covers most of current geologic thinking.

I also like his explanation of the oil situation. He looks at alternatives and points out that we may well be living in a unique time of history.

Excellent!

This books serves as an excellent introduction to geology and earth sciences. It is extremely well written and explains difficult concepts well. Because it is written as a college textbook the examples and analogies given are drawn from common experience that are easy to understand.
Among the best part of the book are the illustrations which are beautiful to look at and supplement the text expertly, again reinforcing concepts.
I appreciated the way the author has integrated the broad theory of plate tectonics throughout all sections of the book. In particular he has expertly woven the theory of plate tectonics into the history of the earth's evolution and how that in turn has led to the evolution of life.
This book is a great introduction for college students and for the educated layman looking to better appreciate and understand this wonderful place we call earth.

Working backward in time, physicists Dauber and Muller, both engagingly lucid writers, identify and describe the three main events that brought life to planet Earth. They begin 65 million years ago when a comet or asteroid slammed into the earth and so disrupted the balance of life that two-thirds of all plant and animal species, including the dinosaurs, became extinct. This cataclysmic collision triggered the growth of mammals that led, eventually, to human evolution. Dauber and Muller relate the story of how the Nobel Prize winner Luis Alvarez and his son, Walter Alvarez, presented and then had to defend this theory, which initially sparked heated debate. But back to the cosmos. The next crucial occurrence the authors discuss is the explosion of a giant star, a supernova that brought into being all the chemical elements essential to life. As Dauber and Muller explain the dynamics of this stellar destruction, we suddenly grasp the literal truth of the song lyric "We are stardust." Excellent popular science about evolution of the universe.

The authors' three big bangs are 1) THE Big Bang thought to
have given birth to the known universe, 2) the later explosions
of supernovas which produced the heavy elements not
originally present in the early universe, which was dominated
by the light elements hydrogen and helium, and 3) the crash of
a comet or asteroid near the Yucatan peninsula 65 million
years ago, which destroyed the dinosaurs and gave fresh
opportunities to mammals and, eventually, to us humans. For
the authors, these diverse events are linked because they have
each played an enormous role in determining the nature of the
world we now live in. These three big bangs give us a strong sense of physical
evolution, comparable to the modern view of biological
evolution. This is a new perception. When I was a child in the
1940's I read everything about popular astronomy I could get
my hands on. The view I got at the time was of a completely
static universe, in which nothing much ever happened. The
universe was magnificent and awesome but certainly not
dynamic. Now the universe is a place of explosive evolution
and is vastly more magnificent and awesome. "The Three Big
Bangs" tells this story well. This is a book that openly panders
to our fascination with violence, but in a way that is socially
acceptable!

Great introduction to the science of "How we got here."

This truly enjoyable book is a very readable overview of what I find to be some of the most interesting areas of science. The author clearly explains the formation of the universe, the formation of our solar system, and the mass extinction that eventually brought mammals to where they are today.

I have recommended this book to many of my friends who have shown an interest in layman's astrophysics.

"Tragedy" is right on!

I was one of the "originals" on James Journey of Power, beginning in August 2001, when the Journey had just been conceived. Like Connie, I went to all his events, (tho not in so short a time frame as she and Richard), and also "Dream Teamed" a number of events. I implored my husband to try just one event, as he thought I was perhaps getting into a cult from hearing about some of the activities we did. He went and was convinced that it was worthy of his time and money also. James is a Master Teacher, and we learned so much from him, and the other participants became like a family to us also. We still maintain ties with quite a number of people we met in this way. But at the time the WWS (World Wealth Society) was introduced, we decided that we could not spend that kind of money, and that James was heading in the wrong direction. My husband and I attended Spiritual Warrior in November/Dec 2007, at the time I was turning 61. It was a good experience overall, but there were warning signs then. One girl we were physically close to in the sweat lodge clearly had a hard time, and could not get out of the lodge on her own. My husband and another physician worked with her, and later sent a message to James, warning that he needed to have medical personnel specifically stationed for this kind of problem. I also got to know Connie at this event, as she was in my "Warrior Group", a small group which met periodically during the week to do assignments and talk about the material.
Connie's book is well written, honest, and thoughtful. She makes no sensational judgments or condemnations that cannot be substantiated by many others of us who attended. It was interesting to me to see the progression of events after we left. We too had the sadness that came from leaving such an extraordinary group of people who attended James events. Most were brave and insightful amd some were downright amazing people. I cannot regret what we did in becoming a part of this Journey, because it was life-changing, but I can only grieve for the lies, lack of respect and denial that James gave to those who put heart and soul into helping him. At the time we knew him, we realized that he was human and had some faults but found him overall knowledgeable and personable and we were able to get to know him personally. I can only thank Connie for writing this book, and making the final points that she did about the personal development arena. I hope that the industry listens to her advice. Jeannie P.S. Deep insights

I was truly amazed by Connie's journey. Even though this journey was with James Ray, the book is mostly about one woman's journey to find herself and prove to herself that she could face her demons and change her life.

Of course I was interested in the "James Ray" connection, but the book is so gripping and personal that I found that he became a bit player within Connie's story. Connie wrote an amazing story. It took a lot of courage to write this book, as she seems to be an ordinary person who came upon what she thought was a person who would lead her into enlightenment, only to find out in the end it is all within her to change herself.

I highly recommend this book. Perhaps by reading it you too can change your life and outlook without needing to line the pockets of yet another wonderful guru.

Journey with her through her quest for personal growth via Ray, his seminars and teachings. Experience through Connie her journey that started with such high hopes and expectations that led to confusion, to frustration then disappointment and finally to tragedy. Be prepared to meet the "emperor" James Ray and then experience the unraveling of trust and faith in a leader that eventually led to questioning, "Does the emperor have no clothes?" then the discovery of the definitive answer. There is much to consider when reading Connie's book. There is much to experience. Go to Egypt and then, later, Machu Picchu. The trips will be exhilarating and worth your time investment.
