Reconstructing Jada Channing, by Savannah J. Frierson

An Ames woman in love is a precarious place to be, but that didn’t stop working-class Jada Channing from falling for the wealthy and gorgeous Aaron McKensie. After one night’s passion resulted in pregnancy, they’d talked about becoming a family. However, Aaron’s father derailed those plans. Now three years and a payoff later, the former lovers reunite at an Atlanta Christmas bash; but the party isn’t merry for either one.

Seeing Jada again fills Aaron with an urgency he hadn’t anticipated and a hope he hadn’t wanted, but the love he still has for her manages to pierce the hurt and anger he’s carried for the past three years. He demands answers for how she could just leave with no warning and end a pregnancy he’d thought they’d both wanted; yet Aaron quickly learns all isn’t what it seems.

Are the feelings Jada and Aaron still share strong enough to bring them together, or is the specter of the past amid contemporary challenges too much to overcome?

Eh, this is far from Trolling Nights and Being Plumville ...
By primesuspect
(I would give this story a 2.5 stars and not 2 if I could)

To start, I'll give some background on the story. Undergrad Freshman Jada Mae Channinng and Grad Student Aaron McKensie starts a strong friendship while attending Harvard and volunteering at a local community center. On the last day of the fall semester, the two can't deny the lust that's been mingling between then for months and finally gives in. The two continues their friendship through the months ahead but with Aaron working for his father's company in Europe and Jada working here way through school, the two lose contact.

Four years later in Atlanta at a dinner party, Aaron and Jada reconnect on terms that aren't so well inviting. Much has changed in four years. Aaron who is often cited in the "Wall Street Journal" is now branching out his business in Atlanta to work closely with NFL team the Atlanta Falcons, is his own multi-millionaire and is in another relationship. Jada is now working her way through Graduate school to become an Educator while holding down two jobs. And oh yeah, she's the mother of Aaron four year old son, Joshua.

Determined to make up for lost time with his "new" family, Aaron does everything in his power to show Jada he's in love with her and wants to be apart of his son's life. But as it may, coming from two families with very different backgrounds is holding them back from what they both want, or at least it's holding back Jada. Aaron's father, Alexander is unwilling to accept that fact that Aaron is not only a father but is in love with a lower-middle class African American women. Jada Mae's grandmother Candace is reluctant about Aaron because of her own prejudices against White men.

But Aaron is willing to walk away from everything including his father, current girlfriend and the company to be with Jada and Aaron exclusively and it's up to him to prove just that to Jada.

My personal take:

I've read 3 other stories by Savannah J Frierson, and of the 4, this one was the most disappointing. I felt like I've read this story several times from other authors. It was kinda "cliche-ish" to me which was what disappointed me the most. I can't say this was a romance novel because there wasn't many romantic moments in the story. There was one intimate scene and I felt like it was severely rushed. SEVERELY rushed!

The character development could have been better. There was one instance where Jada was called "fat" by a counterpart yet, no where in the story was her size ever mentioned until after this incident took place besides when it was mentioned how short she was compared to Aaron who also wasn't described very well. The character Jada came across being extremely whinny and her best friend Deshae was highly nosy! I felt like Deshae fit this stereotypical African American women too well and that bother me to know end. Actually, it got on my nerve to say the least.

What I did like about the story was how well their son Joshua was incorporated. He seemed like an adorable kid.

I won't say you shouldn't read this book because we all have different tastes, but if you've read previous work by Savannah, you might not like this story as much as say, "Trolling Nights", which is the best books I've ever read. I had certain expectation from Savanna after reading other books from her and this one fell extremely short of those expectations. I was just overall disappointed.

An EXCELLENT READ with a Happily Ever After
By Amazon Customer
This is the fourth book by Ms. Frierson that I have read and I was not disappointed. The story line is familiar among other writers. A child is the product of a one-night stand, the couple go their separate ways and the man find out years later he has a child. What is different is the story kept an even pace and there wasn't drama. I DO think the characters were well developed although I will agree with the previous reviewer if Jada went to Harvard, her speech could have been a bit better. Regardless, I appreciated the focus on the physical movements of the characters e.g. "he cupped her face" or "she ran her fingers through his hair" because they showed tenderness, not just lust. I thought the couple's son, Joshua, was your typical four year old and I could actually see him in front of me. I appreciated the interaction of the entire family, not just three main people. The family members were woven into the story and yet I didn't get confused. I felt like I truly knew Jada Mae's family. If you're looking for erotic sex scenes, move on. There were "love" scenes and I feel the tenderness involved shone through. I do feel the chemistry was there between the characters. I totally got going to Waffle House at midnight to meet someone in one's PJs. Also, in this age where I'm forever having to stumble over bad grammar and editing in books, this book was a pleasure. Less work and more enjoyment for me. Was this Ms. Frierson's best work? No. I don't think anything can top "Being Plumville" but I loved it enough that I've read it 3 times so far. It was a love story with a happily ever after and I have no regrets about this read. As a matter of fact, I'm going to read it again.

What a refreshingly intimate tale...
By TexasGirl73
I will admit that I was on the fence the first time I read this story. I had the same concerns with the story (i.e. Jada's speech having gone to Harvard, her job situation and Aaron's reaction to the "news"), but when I read it again I understood and liked the story much more. And since I am probably in the minority because I really didn't care for Trolling Nights (I think Bevin was the most immature and annoying heroine in any of the author's stories), but loved Being Plumville and Beauty Within, I feel like I need to defend the story.

I have read all of the reviews and on some points I agree, but this is not your typical erotic IR story. It is not erotic AT ALL! In actuality none of the author's stories are. This story is more about the intimacy the hero and heroine shared.

For one...The story was well written. You can really tell this author does her homework as far as research and the timelines. The relationship between Aaron and Jada was an intimate one...not one filled with passionate sex. Some people don't know the difference. It was the little things that they did like the cupping of the face and the kissing on the temple and forehead. The reverent touches they shared...those are intimate acts that the writer wrote well and they leapt off the page. Aaron wanted to be intimate with Jada, not just have sex with her. That was very refreshing.
As far as Jada's speech, I think the reader has to remember that we speak differently according to whom we are speaking regardless of where we went to college. And the writer shows this clearly in her conversations with her family verses the conversations she had with Mrs. McKensie and the Prescott's.

****POSSIBLE SPOILER****As far as Aaron's reaction to the news of Joshua, I can understand why he didn't initially go ballistic on Jada. I believe he was really in shock. And eventually after talking to her, he understood why she didn't tell him. She was a financially lower class black woman that got pregnant by a very rich older white man after a one-night stand and losing her virginity. She knew she was in love with him, but she just assumed this was a one-time thing with him because he never told her how he felt. And remember...she asked him was he angry and he told her he was more hurt that she felt she couldn't trust him with that information, but the anger would probably come later. At that moment he just wanted to see his son.

Overall, I really liked the story. I think the story was written well and I loved that she focuses on intimacy rather than sex in these stories.
