Few buildings rivet our attention like skyscrapers. As the race to build higher and higher continues, these symbols of success and economic power dominate and reshape urban skylines across the globe. Opening with Chicago's Reliance Building, built in 1894, and closing with plans for the London Bridge Tower, scheduled to be completed in 2011, eye-catching twoto- four page spreads in this up-to-date and comprehensive volume capture over fifty of the world's most important skyscrapers. Each building is breathtakingly photographed and an accompanying text offers intriguing historical details, notes on construction, and engineering feats. Tracing the evolution of these magnificent structures, Skyscrapers illustrates their significance not only in architectural history, but also as a reflection of humankind's most competitive and optimistic urges.

Great Presentation
By D. Flower
The book starts with an interesting history of skyscrapers, then goes into details of 50 skyscrapers from the past 100 years. Each skyscraper has 2-4 pages, including large photographs. I was a little disappointed that the 2IFC tower in Hong Kong was not included, but happy to see Taipei 101. An excellent touch was to add 6 upcoming skyscrapers, like London's Shard of Glass and the amazing CCTV headquarters in Beijing.

The girl obviously enjoyed drunken fumes breathed into her face
By headbutler
My usual idea of beach reading is "Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin," but a friend recently grabbed my lapels and told me I’m too serious, that I think too much. And here, on my desk, was a 500-page Jackie Collins novel, released at just the right time for pool or beach. I thought: Why not?

I went to the park, channeled my inner Caitlyn Jenner, and plunged into “The Santangelos.” What a world. As a kid, I read Jackie Susann and Harold Robbins, and was seduced by larger-than-life characters doing whatever they wanted with no concern about the cost or the consequences — in my little room in a suburb, I wanted to know them, to be one of them. Lucky Santangelo, the heroine of several Collins bestsellers, is in that grand tradition of social pioneers. So what if her dad wasn’t legit; in a world where anything’s possible, she owns a casino and a movie studio. Now she has a bigger dream: The Keys, a hotel/apartment/casino complex in Vegas. Possible? As Jackie Collins says on the book’s first page, “Never ---- with a Santangelo.”

Is every character gorgeous or rich or famous? Believe it. There is a murder, and of course, Lucky’s son is wrongly accused of it. There are clubs, and drugs, and if any woman has the breasts God gave her, I missed it. Jackie Collins was asked about “50 Shades.” Her comment: “My women kick ass, they don’t get their asses kicked.”

Is the writing outrageous? Try this:

"He scowled at her and began coming on to a braless blond American tourist who was twirling around the dance floor. The girl obviously enjoyed drunken fumes breathed into her face, for after a while they vanished, and Carlo did not return to the yacht until the following morning."

Slather on the Anthelios. Order a blender drink. Relax your mind and float downstream. And, early and often, go into the water and cool off. Because all that, I’d bet, is part of the Jackie Collins beach reading experience. Oh, and tell me where we’re meeting at midnight.

Jackie Collins' THE SANTANGELOS gives us another thrilling chapter of one of fiction's favorite families
By Cyrus Webb
We had to wait a little longer this year to get another Jackie Collins' novel, but I can tell you that THE SANTANGELOS was DEFINITELY worth the wait.

Jackie has a way of thrusting you in the lives of her characters, making you feel their desires, their hatred and the love that comes from one of the most beloved families in fiction.

In this book we are able to see the extent that Lucky is willing to go in order to protect her own, but we are also given the reminder that some things are out of our control. When tragedy hits the Santangelos family will it break them apart or bring them closer together? That is one of the most fascinating layers of the book.

I also love the fact that Max finds her own "voice" so to speak, and come to rely not only on the strength of her mother but the words of her grandfather as well. "You're a Santangelo---an' Santangelos don't quit."

The other interesting things about this novel is that it reminds us that in a digital age EVERYTHING is fair game and the truth is not always something that others feel the need to spotlight. Bobby Santangelo Stanislopoulos realizes this firsthand, and he has to live with the thoughts of others thanks to the world wide web.

This book allows other characters to step up and be noticed, giving readers something to look forward to when it comes to the future of the Santangelo family in other books. Whether this is your first book to read about the family or you've been a fan for some time, you won't be able to forget

Best of the series since Lucky
By Wis_Kim
I picked this one up yesterday and finished it last night. Wow, Jackie's back!!!! I must admit I wasn't all that impressed with the Santangelo novels after how great Chances and Lucky were. But since I'd read them all, I decided to give The Santangelos a shot. And I'm sure glad I did.

I wanted to give it 5 stars, but I have to nitpick a few points. Ms. Collins has a real problem with timelines and continuity, and this has been a problem throughout the series. In The Santangelos, there's no way Gino was in his 90's at the beginning of this book; he was born in 1903, and since "The Santangelos" drops several references to recent events, celebs and technology (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, iPads, etc) that would place Gino at over a hundred years old in the timeline of this book.

How and when did Paige turn into Susan Martino (personality wise)? I noticed that Ms. Collins changed Paige's personality in GOV some, too. Also, there was some blurb in GOV that said Paige, Susan and Gino engaged in threesomes. Uh, no. Gino caught Paige and Susan together and got a divorce. Paige and Lucky hit it off in "Lucky", now it's all about how Lucky had always hated her, and vice versa. And for the last time, Francesca Fern was NOT an opera singer, she was an actress.

Still, it was a page-turner and a half and I found that while there are major time and continuity flaws, I was telling myself "who cares?" But they are worth mentioning, even though I loved the story, and what happened with Bobby and Denver was exactly what I'd been hoping for. Same with Max and Billy.

As the title testifies, students were sworn to secrecy before being given access to this magic text, and only a few manuscripts have survived. Bits of its teachings, such as the use of the magic whistle for summoning spirits, are alluded to in other texts. Another key element of its ritual, the elaborate "Seal of God," has been found in texts and amulets throughout Europe.

Interest in The Sworn Book of Honorius has grown in recent years, yet no modern translations have been attempted--until now.

Purporting to preserve the magic of Solomon in the face of intense persecution by religious authorities, this text includes one of the oldest and most detailed magic rituals. It contains a complete system of magic including how to attain the divine vision, communicate with holy angels, and control aerial, earthly, and infernal spirits for practical gain.

Largely ignored by historians until recently, this text is an important witness to the transmission of Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism to European Hermeticists.

Scholarly Rendering of the Sworn Book of Honorius
By M. Stone
This is an amazing root level resource for many grimoires we are more familiar with, and yet, it's totally unlike anything in the Solomon cycle of works.

At its heart is a magic based on Christian piety. The work centers around an lengthy operation to initiation, similar to Abraham's Book of Sacred Magic. But in comparison of those two works, this is the completely opposite approach. Abraham advises you to write your own prayers, Honorius gives it to you word for word. While Abraham sets you in a process of self-reflection, Honorius assaults the ego with endless prayers, orations, and barbarous names. Ritual and cosmology are stressed in the Honorius System with a complexity that Abraham would have had little patience for. Honorius is much more focused on planetary magic, and working with elementals.

For the Enochian magician, this is a great chance to look at a document that was formative to Dee's system, including the information and variations on the Great Seal of God. Angel magicians looking to expand their lists will find angel names here that are not found elsewhere. Magic historians will be delighted with the synthetic fusion of Merkava mysticism with Catholic ritual, and Byzantine Christianity in general. This early fusion of ideas planted fertile seeds in the Western magic current that can be seen reflected in hundreds of manuscripts in libraries throughout Europe. Ritualists will find the magic whistle completely unique to modern grimoire work, as well as the use of concave circles or "pits" to evoke evil spirits, and an interesting take on planetary calling directions with basically a seven pointed compass.

The reason much of this material was lost to the mainstream magic circles of the time, is that to obtain the book you first had to give an oath that your copy would be destroyed upon your death. It's a wonder this work wasn't lost to us entirely.

As usual Joseph Peterson does a great job footnoting and explaining the context of phrases and customs unfamiliar to the modern reader. His insight into the mediaeval mind is a valuable resource and he is generous in sharing it. Having said that, there is less footnoting here, than you may have come to expect if you have other works by Peterson. The Latin of the work appears on the left and the translation on the right.

The original author was very erudite and familiar, or at least exposed to a variety of mystical and spiritual traditions. Peterson's treatment of the text is scholarly, but the author of the original work was equally so. While the endless prayers, orations, masses, and the like are likely to weary the modern reader, beyond that is a brilliant synthesis of spirito-magical art.

An Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year-Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny, by Laura S

An Invisible Thread tells of the life-long friendship between a busy sales executive and a disadvantaged young boy, and how both of their lives were changed by what began as one small gesture of kindness.

When Laura Schroff brushed by a young panhandler on a New York City corner one rainy afternoon, something made her stop and turn back. She took the boy to lunch at the McDonald’s across the street that day. And she continued to go back, again and again for the next four years until both their lives had changed dramatically. Nearly thirty years later, that young boy, Maurice, is married and has his own family. Now he works to change the lives of disadvantaged kids, just like the boy he used to be.
An Invisible Thread is the true story of the bond between a harried sales executive and an eleven-year-old boy who seemed destined for a life of poverty. It is the heartwarming story of a friendship that has spanned three decades and brought meaning to an over-scheduled professional and hope to a hungry and desperate boy living on the streets.

"I thought I knew what An Invisible Thread was going to be. I thought it would be a simple and hopeful story about a woman who saved a boy. I was wrong. It's a complex and unswervingly honest story about a woman and a boy who saved each other. By its raw honesty and lack of excess sentimentality, it is even more inspirational. This is a book capable of restoring our faith in each other and in the very idea that maybe everything is going to be okay after all." (Catherine Ryan Hyde, author of Pay It Forward and Jumpstart the World )

"An Invisible Thread—a remarkable story, told so beautifully and honestly—shows us what's possible when we are not afraid to connect with another human being and tap into our compassion. It is a story about the power each of us has to elevate someone else's life and how our own life is enriched in the process. This special book reminds us that damaging cycles can be broken and not to neglect the humanity of the strangers we brush up against every day." (Chris Gardner, bestselling author of The Pursuit of Happyness and Start Where You Are )

"A straightforward tale of kindness and paying it forward in 1980s New York . . . For readers seeking an uplifting reminder that small gestures matter." (Kirkus Reviews)

"According to an old Chinese proverb, there's an invisible thread that connects two people who are destined to meet and influence each other's lives. . . . As Schroff relates Maurice's story, she tells of her own father's alcoholism and abuse, and readers see how desperately these two need each other in this feel-good story about the far-reaching benefits of kindness." (Publishers Weekly)

"An Invisible Thread is like The Blind Side, but instead of football, it’s food. These are two people who were brought together by one simple meal, and it literally changed the course of both of their lives. This is a must-read . . . you can read it in a day because it’s impossible to put down. If you read it and find it as moving as I did, pay it forward: buy a copy and give it to a friend.” (Rachael Ray, host of The Rachael Ray Show )

“This book is a game-changer . . . each chapter touches your heart. An Invisible Thread is a gift to us all. America needs this book now more than ever.” (Coach Ron Tunick, national radio show host, The Business of Life )

“An incredible story . . . I would encourage everyone to pick up this book.” (Clayton Morris, host, Fox and Friends )

"If you have a beating heart—or if you fear you’re suffering a hardening of the emotional arteries—you really ought to commit to this book at the earliest possible opportunity . . . read this book. And pass it on. And encourage the next reader to do the same.” (Jesse Kornbluth Huffington Post)

"This is one of the most touching and refreshing and inspiring stories I have read in a long time. If you had made this story up, I wouldn’t have believed it, but it’s true. We all need something to inspire us, and I promise you, this book will make you want to stand up and do something nice for people. What a wonderful and needed story for all of us. An Invisible Thread is fantastic." (Mike Huckabee, Former Governor of Arkansas, Host of Fox News; Huckabee Show )

"A single moment of obedience by an ordinary person started a wonderful relationship and a better life for a poor street child. Maurice started to dream, because Laura showed him compassion and kindness. This is exactly what Jesus is asking his followers to do today in a broken world. An Invisible Thread is an example for each and every one of us, not only in South Africa but in every other country. This book can and will change the world." (Dr. Johan Smith, Pastor of Moreleta Church in Pretoria, South Africa )

"When advertising executive Laura Schroff was approached by 11-year-old panhandler Maurice, at first, she ignored him: 'His words were part of the clatter, like a car horn or someone yelling for a cab. They were, you could say, just noise—the kind of nuisance New Yorkers learn to tune out.' A moment later, when she came to, she returned and invited her new acquaintance to lunch at McDonald's, the beginning of a human connection that would change both their lives. An Invisible Thread picks up the progress of two very different people with strangely parallel stories of 'complicated pasts and fragile dreams.' Uplifting, without an ounce of pretension."

Wonderful
By Silver's Reviews
Maurice had never met anyone like Laura and Laura had never met anyone like Maurice. They were from two different worlds. Laura doesn't know why she stopped and turned back after Maurice asked her for some money, but she is glad she did.

Through Maurice, Laura learned about the life he and thousands of others were living on a daily basis....not a pleasant life at all. Laura was helping Maurice to live a better life at least one day a week, and it seemed to be paying off since she could see a change in him even though he had to go back to his horrible living conditions after he left her.

As well as learning about the living conditions of others, the author also gave the reader a chance to find out that her childhood/family life was not very easy.....her father was an abusive alcoholic, and her mother sat by not being able to defend herself or her children. Obviously the author's childhood and the childhood of her brothers and sisters had an impact on their entire life and on her decision to turn back and fulfill Maurice's plea for help.

The descriptions in the book are very detailed and heartbreaking but also heartwarming. You will become a part of the lives of every character and you will feel their pain and happiness.

An Invisible Thread is the perfect title for this book. The book brought to the surface that we all have a connection to other human beings even though that connection may not be outwardly visible.

I truly enjoyed the book because of the honesty of feelings and of human kindness and human connection. This is a must read. Laura Schroff is a brave woman to reveal all this about her life, but it definitely will make you realize that no matter how small the gesture may be, we can make a difference for someone else. 5/5

more complex than you might initially think
By a long way from home
I was very torn throughout the reading of this book. Once I finished reading I turned to the user reviews on amazon to see what others thought. I found myself agreeing with both the positive and negative reviews which made me sit back and think long and hard about things.

What drew me to the book was not just the story, but the fact that the first editorial review stated that there was a "lack of excess sentimentality" As far as my tastes go, I don't like gratuitous sentimentality so that simple statement was a ringing endorsement. But the book IS sentimental, sometimes overly so, and, as other less favorable reviews have pointed out, there is a self congratulatory undercurrent at times. There were points in my reading of An Invisible Thread that I would have hurled the book across the room in frustration. The fact that I was reading on the kindle app for my android phone was probably the main reason for my restraint. The author was often the hero in her stories and I found myself wondering how much of a role revisionist history played in her retelling of her childhood and even certain scenes with Maurice. Or maybe not. There are already too many spoilers here in these user reviews so I am not going to give anything away, but suffice it to say that when Laura met Michael I was so angry I wasn't sure I would finish the book. Sure, she talked about her struggles with her decisions but I think I didn't always believe her. There we a few other instances of cowardice in the book that made me cringe but then I had to ask myself whether I would be any less cowardly in some of these emotionally difficult situations. Unfortunately, the answer is probably, NO. Edit* I should note, that along with what I am calling cowardice, Laura also showed incredible bravery and/or courage.

What I finally realized was that no matter how frustrated or angry I became at times, something was keeping me glued to this book. I am a truly terrible reader and always have been. Slow, distractible and easily bored. I can't remember the last book I read in one day. This one I read in half a day, losing precious hours of sleep as I dug deeper and deeper into the story. I loved Maurice. His indomitable spirit in the face of the overwhelming odds against him was just a joy to watch unfold. If I am honest with myself I would have to say that I ended up loving Laura as well. I didn't always like her but what she did for Maurice can't be denied no matter what you decide her motives were. Does it lessen the gift when the giver is also the receiver? I don't think so. Laura gave so much to Maurice and got so much back in return. I don't think we need to penalize her for the fact that in the process of saving Maurice, she managed to save herself as well. Isn't this precisely how so much of life works? Laura is multifaceted and as I turned pages I found myself with myriad emotions about her -- most of them quite positive. In fact, I would like to meet her and find out more of the story that didn't fit in these pages.

We humans are such complex creatures. To sum either one of these two characters up as either privileged, underprivileged, self serving, selfish, innocent, lovable, a victim, cowardly, a hero, a superhero, courageous, or sentimental, is to miss the fact that they are all of the above and then some. They are human. Flawed. Did Laura and Maurice always have pure motives for all the decisions they made? Probably not. I don't know anyone whose motives are always pure. Some reviewers question why Laura wrote the book if not for self congratulations. Maybe. Or maybe she knew she had a good story to tell. The fact that it painted her in a good light is just part of the tale. She DID do a good thing. Don't lose sight of that fact just because at times she seems to feel good about herself. She ought to feel good. It was a potentially miserably unhappy story with a warm and fuzzy ending (FYI - I usually hate warm and fuzzy endings). She did something that most people would not have done and she did it with conviction (and more than a bit of blind faith).

I don't know why Laura (and Alex) chose to write the book. I don't know whether she simply had a story to tell or whether she needed more self validation. I don't actually care WHY she wrote it. I care THAT she wrote it. It comes at a time in our lives when apathy is rampant and relationships are more fragile than ever. Was this a brilliant piece of writing? No, not at all really. Again, I don't really care. It was a simple story (albeit with some complex emotions) simply told. I enjoyed the journey and am finding the thoughtful aftermath more rich and colorful than I had expected.

Bottom line: I recommend the book.

I Wanted to Love It, But...
By Louisa M
God bless Laura Schroff and Maurice Maczyk. An Invisible Thread tells their story; Laura, a successful NY career woman, and Maurice, the young 11-year-old panhandler, whom she helped and befriended. Her initial act of kindness, and the lessons they taught one another and share here, are indeed inspiritional, and hopefully will help to change many lives for the better.

But parts of this book are difficult to read. The description of the welfare hotel where Maurice lived at one time is horrifying; the abuse that Laura and her family suffered at the hands of her alcoholic father is even worse. I must applaud the author for her honesty...although she does pat herself on the back a little too often, she also gives other people credit where due, and admits if she made a mistake.

There are many small details (for example, the brown bag lunches, and the bicycle) which add heart to the story, but then other chapters jump ahead abruptly, and suddenly the reader is two years in the future without knowing what transpired in between. Also, the editing could have been better...if Maurice is on a bike, he should "pedal" away, not "peddle," as it is spelled in the text.

For me, almost the saddest part of the book was the following sentence: "He (the suthor's husband) even relented and allowed me to invite Maurice to our home for Christmas one year." Allowed her? Wasn't it her home also? It is obvious that Laura and Maurice have always had a special relationship; what a pity that they were forced to miss any time together at all.

The photo inserts are helpful, and a nice addition, as is the follow-up interview with the author.

Ms. Schroff states that the book idea grew from a magazine article. It is a good book, but not great. Borrow it from the library, and use the money you would have spent on a purchase to perform your own act of kindness. I wish Laura, Maurice, and their entire extended family all the best.

But I am not depressed because I plan to continue in my consulting business for 30 more years and the book has many new pieces of practical advice that I can immediately use."

The Business of Consulting
By Rungsted
This is a very very basic book about consulting, for people who have never worked with consulting and need to understand a whole new practice. I expected more - it would have been helpful if it had emphasized how elementary it is.

Covering wide ranging topics from start-up costs to the ethics of consulting, Elaine's book is the most quintessential consulting resource I have come across. If you are looking for a basic how-to guide to get started in the consulting business, this book will help walk you through the steps of deciding on your business structure, identifying your strongest skill sets, and scoping out potential customers. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an in-depth approach, you can also leverage the wealth of knowledge and experience that Elaine shares throughout the book. It is amazing to read what she has learned over her decades of experience in this profession. I will be buying several copies of this book to hand out to colleagues!

Great Followup Book
By Mitch Paioff
This is Elaine Biech's followup book to her 2001 "The Consultant's Quick Start Guide", which is an excellent book. In this new offering, Biech has obviously done more research, and presents a more thorough picture of the consulting business as a whole.

Included in this book are her trademark checklists, forms, and samples. But the added value comes from her insights on topics such as how to get started, building client relationships, and growing a consulting business.

This is a well-written book with a lot of good advice for new consultants. It offers more tips than her "Quick Start Guide", and poses many thought-provoking questions.

Would I buy both books? Yes, I would. Biech is a leader in her field and her books are well worth the money.

The Story of Sushi: An Unlikely Saga of Raw Fish and Rice, by Trevor Corson

A New York Times Editor's Choice

Everything you never knew about sushi— its surprising origins, the colorful lives of its chefs, and the bizarre behavior of the creatures that compose it

Trevor Corson takes us behind the scenes at America's first sushi-chef training academy, as eager novices strive to master the elusive art of cooking without cooking. He delves into the biology and natural history of the edible creatures of the sea, and tells the fascinating story of an Indo-Chinese meal reinvented in nineteenth-century Tokyo as a cheap fast food. He reveals the pioneers who brought sushi to the United States and explores how this unlikely meal is exploding into the American heartland just as the long-term future of sushi may be unraveling.

The Story of Sushi is at once a compelling tale of human determination and a delectable smorgasbord of surprising food science, intrepid reporting, and provocative cultural history.

From Publishers Weekly
Corson (The Secret Life of Lobsters) spent months at a "sushi school" run out of a Japanese restaurant in Hermosa Beach, Calif., observing the students as they learned how to prepare a seemingly endless variety of fish. Although the reporting focuses primarily on Kate, a young woman who struggles to overcome her lack of confidence, many of the other students get a turn in the spotlight, as do the restaurant's owner and the head instructor. This would make for a riveting enough story on its own, but Corson beautifully intersperses the drama with lessons about the history and science of each fish the class encounters, along with the rice and wasabi. He also reveals that just about everything Americans know about eating sushi is wrong, down to using chopsticks to dunk their fish in soy sauce. Foodies will find dozens of useful tips to enhance their appreciation of "the fast food of old Tokyo," especially if they entrust an experienced chef to prepare an omakase meal for them. The combination of culinary insights and personal drama makes for one of the more compelling food-themed books in recent years.

From Booklist
Americans from as recently as 20 years ago would be astounded to learn that the present generation would regularly sit down to a meal consisting principally of raw fish. Today, it's hard to find an American city that does not host at least one thriving sushi bar, and even some supermarkets feature a take-home sushi section. Following a student through the program of the decade-old California Sushi Academy, Corson uncovers the history of sushi, from its humble beginnings in Japan to its present worldwide ubiquity. Starting from Los Angeles' Little Tokyo, sushi initially attracted a celebrity following intrigued by sushi's novelty and minimalism. Stateside sushi chefs invented new varieties keyed to American proclivities and ingredients and, in a wanton affront to tradition, began to violate the inflexible male-only order of skilled sushi chefs. Americans may still drench their rice with too much soy sauce, but their hunger for more and better-quality sushi keeps on growing. Knoblauch, Mark

Review of The Story of Sushi
By David J. Kosmider
The Story of Sushi: An Unlikely Saga of Raw Fish and Rice by Trevor Corson (previously titled, The Zen of Fish: The Story of Sushi, from Samurai to Supermarket), intertwines history with entertainment.

Corson focuses on the story of a young woman named Kate, described as a fun down to earth girl who was athletic and one of the guys until she broke a finger in High School. Unable to play sports anymore she became depressed and developed an eating disorder. As her depression and eating habits grew worse a friend recommended Kate try sushi. Hesitant at first Kate tried it and ended up loving it. Seemingly, more than the sushi, Kate enjoyed the attitude of the chefs who were comical and outgoing, reminding her of herself before getting sick.

As Kate continued visiting this sushi bar her overall health improved. As she pondered her future, she knew she wanted a career in which she could build friendships with customers, helping them to enjoy life. As if it was fate, Kate saw an ad for the California Sushi Academy. After a year of debating, she walked out on a leap of faith, leaving everything and everyone behind on a quest to be a sushi chef. The California Sushi Academy, California’s first Sushi Academy, consisted of an extensive 12-week training program. Corson explains how this is different from Japan where sushi apprentices spend 5 years or more just learning to make the rice before being allowed to handle anything else.

The sushi-related history and culture lessons carefully woven into Kate’s story were very interesting and informative. Corson brought his readers through sushi’s humble beginnings in Japan to its worldwide fame today. Corson did a good job painting a picture allowing his readers to “see” exactly what he was talking about. Scenes displaying Japanese culture like the auctions at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, the history of Japanese knives and even the use of Japanese terms throughout the book tied the culture in nicely.

The history of the food itself was also interesting. The precision put into preparing meals requires lots of practice. The process of making certain foods like miso and soy sauce were eye opening and the natural history of the different types of fish and how to catch/farm, cook, and/or present them was informative.

Some of the other facts mentioned by Carson that were particularly interesting is that the California Roll was invented due to a Californian sushi chef running out of fatty tuna; the term mack daddy was derived from mackerels, and that the organisms eaten by flamingos are responsible for their color. Overall, the book was interesting and educational. Carson’s choice to focus on Kate, instead of others in the class, was smart because Kate being new to Sushi and Japanese culture, like many of his readers, was a nice relatable gateway to the “story of sushi”.

Point me to the next sushi bar please
By TravellingCari
The author has no affiliation with the California Sushi Academy. He paid for all sushi consumed in the course of his research

This book made me crave sushi for the entire week that I was reading it. I’m a sushi fiend so this isn’t surprising, but it was a little odd when I was reading at 8 AM. This had been on my wish list for a long time.

As much as I enjoyed the info that I learned about sushi through Zoran, Kate, Marcos, Toshi and the others, I enjoyed the people. Although this was a work of documentary non-fiction, it read like a novel at times and the central figures were key. Toshi, the pioneer of American sushi; Kate the unsettled student; Zoran the teacher who is disappeared back to Australia midway through the semester; Takumi the former JPop singer. The Academy itself was a bit of a character as well.

Luckily for this sushi fiend, little beyond the author’s explanation of mold’s role in miso and sushi rice made me think twice about the food I devour. I fell in love with sushi at the tale end of my first stint in Japan but never really had a huge interest in its creation. I don’t think I’ve made sushi since a friend’s obon party in August… 2002! This book made me curious about some of the behind the scenes and probably made me a more educated consumer at the sushi bar. I learned a lot about the different fish without too much overwhelming detail

Disease isn’t the only problem. Humans like to eat yellowtail, but yellowtail also like to eat yellowtail.

Of the author’s comments on fish that’s the one I loved the most. I’m picturing carnivorous yellowtail on the sushi bar. I really enjoyed the background on the rice as its status in the US is so different to its standing in Japan.

I’m glad to see the Toshi’s California Sushi Academy is still going (despite an awful website) and to “see” Kate and company on Corson’s site.I look forward to reading more of Corson's work.

You never know...
By Burning down the house
Very well written book with interesting (real) characters (live people that is). Here I am having eaten sushi all my life and could not imagine the global infrastructure that goes into that one seemingly simple dish. And the history of sushi, now that is surprising; but logical - and no spoiler alert, read the book. Nor did I know how to properly eat sushi, having been a child of the mass produced super-market type of sushi. In reading the book, I considered being a sushi chef, but by the end after the descriptions of preparing fish, (which the author does with coolness of a well-trained surgeon) I decided there is a place in this world for a highly skilled vegan sushi chef and restaurant. But it won't have the same allure as biting into a piece of almost live meat from a creature carefully harvested and prepared by the loving hands of a real sushi chef. Read it, you'll like it! And you will appreciate sushi even more after you read the book.
