Annie Bell Coomer was born in 1942 in a small East Texas town in a tent with a dirt floor. Her mother picked blackberries, barefooted, on the day she was born. Meager Beginnings is a story about Annie Bell and of her family's life in East Texas and on the road traveling across Texas as migrant seasonal farm workers. It tells about a mother's love for her children and for a husband who tried his best to destroy his family. The story is about six brothers and four sisters' love for each other and for their mother. It is about a love/hate relationship with their daddy, but love won out in the end. Meager Beginnings is humorous; it is sad, and it is true.

About the Author
Annie Bell Baldwin was born in Lindale, Texas and has lived there her entire life. In February 2006, the Lindale Volunteer Fire Department named their new substation in her honor. Her work has been featured in the Lindale newspaper. In 2008, she received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Lindale Chamber of Commerce. She was one of ten children and is now a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Thought-provoking Stories From a Little Girl Sitting on the Dirt Floor of a Tent

I can't imagine a more intimate portrayal of growing up on the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder than the one presented in Meager Beginnings. This book is by a first-time author who pens her memoir in her 60's about growing up as dirt-poor, migrant farm workers in the 1940's and 50's. Imagine every story your grandparents ever told you about the hard times of their youth compressed into 300 pages. That's what you get out of this book. Humorous and eye-opening. I love this book!

Interesting

The author and I are very close in age and I am now living close to where she was born and raised. Her experiences as a child were much harder than mine and yet I could identify with a lot of the things she wrote about. I enjoyed the childhood comparison.
