So many dumb exercises, so many daffy weight machines, so many useless gadgets litter gyms that I visit all over the world, it boils my blood. When I began working with athletes over a quarter century ago, men still swung Indian clubs and stretched steel springs in pretense at resistance training. And women stood in vibrating belts or pressed beefy booties on revolving wooden rollers, vainly believing they would shake or pummel off their fat. Today it's isolation weight machines, with restrictive pads and straps and other gizmos that ensure only a particular muscle gets exercised. Exerting that muscle's new found strength in any free movement of sport virtually guarantees injury to untrained stabilizers and connective tissues. Then there's the stair steppers and suchlike, designed to soothe egos more than take off bodyfat, by moving the ankles about 3 1/2 inches. None of that nonsense insults you here. The Power Program is the latest update of the training system used by the Colgan Institute to increase the power of athletes at all levels, from weekend warriors to Olympic medallists, in the whole alphabet of sport. From archery, basketball and boxing, through skiing, track and field, and tennis, to America's Cup yachting, this program provides a system of weight training that fits with human physiology and the science of strength and speed development. It gives you all you need to rebuild yourself as a body of power. As we move into the new millennium, the value of the correct weight training is finally becoming apparent, not only to athletes but to everyone who wants a powerful, disease-resistant body. Dr Worthy of the American College of Sports Medicine put it best: "Done correctly, weight training is the most efficient, effective, and safest form of exercise there is, and it won't be long before people realize it." In choosing this book you are well on your way....

Athletes/anyone serious about functional muscles START HERE!
By Nevada
I can honestly say, having read over 20 books and untold magazine articles on strength training, bodybuilding, and lifting in general...START HERE. This is the first book. What is unique about Dr. Colgan's book, is he is helping define the protocols for USEFUL, ATHLETIC muscle and range of motion. If you are a BODYBUILDER, this book may be of limited value to you. If you are an athlete or someone serious about improving your health and well being through range of motion, proper excercises, and improving your strength and power, then you have to have this book. It is clear, easy to read, and concise.

I have improved my strength, power, health...AND...tendonitis, chronic injuries (knee and shoulder surgery artifacts) through the techniques described here. Don't shortcut. Start at the beginning (I didn't, and paid the price, but now I'm cured because I started over and my shoulder, knee, and tennis elbow haven't felt better in years).

His routines are smart. Range of motion is emphasized, including intelligent stretching and exercises, rather than body-builder's limited range of motion exercises. They progress correctly, day to day, week to week and month to month. They allow for lots of rest and won't even come close to burning you out. Sometimes you will leave the gym wondering if you really did enough (you did!). They are relatively short, focused/concentrated, and enjoyable gym sessions, and you will see results. I body-built when I was a kid. 25 years later, this routine is far more satisfying in strength and power results. I am pretty sure I will never stop completely my attention to keeping a reasonably powerful and athletic body, whatever my age.

Downsides to the stuff in this book...believe me I really have tried and I simply can't find any. I'm a bit annoyed there isn't a sequel or something more for me to read on this subject. I've tried buying many other books, and have yet to find one that even reasonably measures up to the comprehensive, well thought out, and detailed protocols in this book. It really is as good as a one-stop source to get you well along the road.

I wish I could have been more brief in this review, but my final point about this book is that if you follow the program he sets forth, it is easy to do, enjoyable, you will see plenty of results within 6 weeks (especially you folks who aren't as strong as you used to be...you will get most of it back really fast), and the most exciting thing for me is that by starting where he says, you really can improve your joint and connective tissue health. My shoulder, knees, and elbow are so much healthier and pain-free (not to mention STRONGER!) than they've ever been, I just can't say enough about this book and these protocols.

I have read the fitness/strength literature since forever. The program outlined in this book makes sense and it works. For real athletes and duffers like me. My shoulder problems are healing and my knees function better. Plus, Colgan ins a really nice guy who will answer your questions. Check out his other stuff.
Hightly recommended.

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy's instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea's forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors from both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape? They have no choice. If the demigods don't succeed, Gaea's armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Fans won't be disappointed as the cliff-hanger ending from the previous book, The Mark of Athena (Hyperion, 2012), leads to further exciting adventures by the intrepid demigods in this penultimate book in the "Heroes of Olympus" series. Annabeth and Percy have fallen down into Tantarus, and they must fight off the attacks from the monsters stuck there long enough to find the Doors of Death. The other five demigods must get to Eprius in Greece, find the House of Hades to open the Doors of Death on the mortal side, save Annabeth and Percy, and seal the entrance to stop Gaea's forces from escaping into the mortal world and destroying it. The Gods are incapacitated by their Greek and Roman personalities warring with one another, and the demigods from Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter are on the verge of an all-out war. As Annabeth and Percy struggle to survive Tantarus's poisonous atmosphere and creatures, the other demigods must undergo harsh trials-particularly Hazel, Frank, and Leo, but they learn and grow mentally and physically from their experiences. The heroes realize that they cannot change their parentage but they can control their legacy. While more serious than the previous titles, there are lighthearted moments here, many involving a farting polecat. The horrifying monsters are nicely balanced by peace-loving Titan Bob, a skeleton calico cat called Small Bob, and gentle giant Damasen. Fans will be thrilled to know the series continues with The Blood of Olympus in 2014.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

From Booklist
For Percy Jackson fans, it’s been a long year since the cliffhanger at the end of The Mark of Athena (2012). Now Riordan picks up the story and carries it to a rewarding conclusion, with the main set of characters reunited and preparing themselves for the final showdown with Gaea. Throughout the book, Percy and Annabeth make their harrowing way through the underworld to the Doors of Death. Meanwhile, Hazel, Leo, Frank, Piper, Jason, Nico, and Reyna endure their own perils, all the way through to the story’s climax. In addition to experiencing growth spurts, several of the teen demigods take significant steps toward understanding their powers, accepting their feelings, trusting each other, and taking responsibility for leadership. Adventure fans will relish the action as their heroes confront formidable foes, while readers who have come to love the characters will enjoy following the different individuals as they take the stage in scenes that are usually dramatic, often witty, and occasionally surprising. A satisfying, penultimate entry in the Heroes of Olympus series. Grades 6-9. --Carolyn Phelan

Having plunged into Tartarus at the end of the last book, The Mark of Athena (2013), Percy and Annabeth struggle toward the Doors of Death, while their friends hurry to meet them on the other side at the titular House of Hades. Riordan is most successful in his evocation of Tartarus and its hellish, monster-infested landscape. Without lightening his heroes' miseries in any way, the author provides a helper and necessary mood-lifter in the person of Iapetus/Bob, the Titan whose memory Percy had obliterated with the waters of Lethe in a previous adventure. Now Hades' janitor, Bob, along with a skeletal saber-tooth kitten he names Small Bob, joins Percy and Annabeth on their trek, causing them both to plumb unexpected moral depths. Meanwhile, on board (and off) the Argo II, Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel and Frank similarly must come to understand themselves better in order to accomplish the tasks set before them (though not to equal extents). Though Riordan doesn't stint on action or laughs (fart jokes abound, and a tart-tongued Calypso is a special treat), readers may find themselves appreciating these moments of contemplation all the more for the depth of characterization they reveal. The denouement finds the demigods poised for the final battle with Gaea and her minions; they have exactly 14 days to save the world. In this adventure, victories are hard-won and the essence of bravery nuanced, making the journey as satisfying as it is entertaining. (Fantasy. 10-14) Kirkus"

Another amazing installment for Percy & Co.!!!
By Jaded_Gal
I started buying Rick Riordan's books with the intention of using them to read to my son, who was 5 yrs old at the time. My "plan" was to show him just how much fun reading (or having a book read to you) is & how a good book could capture your mind.

It worked. We stated with the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, quickly moved on to The Kane Chronicles & by the time the Lost Heroes of Olympus series was starting my son, now 8, reads them himself. As a child diagnosed with ADHD at age 5, my son loved that all the demigods had ADHD & the reasoning/explanations that came with it.

Normally, as a bibliophile I am 1 of "those people" who has the next installment in a book series in my hands the day it comes out. My work schedule has been hectic so the release date of The House of Hades came & went without my notice.....UNTIL I was wandering through a store & there it was on the shelf. I bought it immediately, all the while kicking myself that I'd forgotten. See, I started buying them for my son, but I quickly came to adore the books as much as him, reading them in quick succession.

-----------POSSIBLE SPOILERS-----------
In my opinion, Riordan has done it AGAIN. I gotta tell you, this man is BRILLIANT. I'm always blown away by the fluid nature of his writing, the way Riordan seemingly has endless ideas that pour forth in his books. As a reader, just when you start to think, "there's not really anywhere else he can go", BAM, he pulls a new & terrific storyline out of his hat. Impossibly, it's always more exciting than the last.

I've read on a few blogs & book boards that the next installment in The Lost Heroes of Olympus may be the final tome in the adventures of Percy & friends. If this is true, I'll be deeply saddened & will miss Percy & his cohorts deeply, as will my son. But like J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, there comes a point where story lines, even those with beloved characters, must come to a close. Should the 5th book in TLHO series be the final one, I'll be sad, but Percy & his friends have had an epic run, I'm just glad I was able to share in it.

The House of Hades picks up where The Mark of Athena left off, you have Percy & Annabeth endlessly falling (at least to them, it feels that way) to Tartarus. The rest of the crew Leo, Piper, Jason, Frank, Hazel, Nico & Coach Hodge are left to stop the the Greek/Roman war between the camps AND reach the Doors of Death in the Mortal world, helping to rescue Percy & Annabeth while closing the Doors of Death to Gaea forces.

As usual the POV is switched up between characters, with Nico being the only 1 to not have a POV chapter. Sure, Nico is featured many times in others POV, but never his own. We get to know Hazel quite a bit more this time around, learning exactly how important her presence IS to this mission. As not only a child of Pluto/Hades, she also is strongly connected to Hecate & can influence the Mist & magic.

Piper shines in this book as well, this time around she's no longer a "damsel in distress" but a young lady learning her way in the world, seeing her value as a fighter & asset to the quest & not just another pretty face. I'd say that this installment really shows off some girl power, developing Hazel & Piper beautifully. This time the girls don't need rescuing, they're saving themselves, as well as the boys.

Frank finally comes into his own here too. No longer a chubby, awkward kid who can turn into various animals, Frank embraces his true power & transform into his true self. Thus results in a stronger, more certain Frank, a leader, not a follower. Frank also experiences a physical transformation as well, almost like he went through puberty to older teenager in an instant. This occurrence really helps Frank to be more confident & embrace his heritage as a child of Ares.

Leo grows up as well, finally meeting a girl to take his mind off the unattainable Hazel when he's catapulted to Ogygia by Khione & meets Calypso. At first Calypso isn't impressed & due to a magical "defect", the island won't provide a raft to take Leo away from the island. What results is Calypso learning to care for Leo as he falls for her, ending in a raft taking Leo away from Calypso with Leo swearing on the River Styx he will come back to get her, even though according to Calypso, no man finds Ogygia twice. The end result is a more mature, heartsick Leo, still a joker, but obviously more grounded. His focus removed from Hazel, Leo & Frank actually become friends after this.

Jason, well, I feel I know his character the LEAST of all. He has POV chapters & the most impact filled scenes with Nico, but other than that? All I can tell you is that Jason chooses the Greek side, away from his Roman roots, changing his role in a key battle at the end. He's Pipers boyfriend. Other than that, don't really understand his character. I wish he was written in a way that I'd connect to him better.

Percy & Annabeth, oh I LOVE THEM. During their shifting POV monologues, the majority of the time they are struggling together to survive Tartarus to find the Doors of Death. Instead of the headstrong, always has fight in him Percy & the calm, can talk/think her way out of anything Annabeth, we see a much more reserved duo. Several times you think they might be ready to give up, but they always pull it out, in many cases, the nick of time. With the help of former foes, Percy & Annabeth are able to keep fighting to their goal.

Coach Hodge, I really like this over the top saytr. While he doesn't have a POV chapter & is still in the background, he adds much comedy relief to his appearances. We definitely learn more about Coach Hodge & that NO, fighting is not the only thing in the world to him. Something (someone) else means more.

!!!!!!!BIG FREAKING DEFINITE SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Nico, oh my poor misunderstood Nico. This next part of my review is a BIG hot button topic, one plenty of parents were very upset about. In previous books, we thought Nico was so standoffish to Percy/Annabeth BECAUSE Nico liked Annabeth & was jealous of Percy. Nope. We were wrong. Now flip that. In a POV of Jason Grace, Nico accompanies him to retrieve a scepter & they end up having to see Cupid to get that scepter. A god Nico is terribly afraid of. Because Nico has a crush/thing/love for PERCY. One he has to admit to Cupid, in front of Jason Grace.

Yep, Nico is GAY. Personally, this isn't a deal breaker for me. I have no intention of boycotting or burning my Riordan books. I will still recommend them to friends w/ children my sons age or younger. I think people are getting out of hand being so upset about this. There isn't a graphic fantasy love scene, just the reveal. Many parents are complaining because they have 5, 6, 7 year olds reading the books & didn't want to have "that" conversation yet, b/c at 10, the age Nico developed the crush, parents are saying it's not possible to "know" if you're gay. I can't answer that, but I do know that many studies have shown that it's an inborn thing in the brain. You don't choose it, you just are or aren't. It's just a part of the persons being. As to explaining to your younger kids? I had that conversation when my son started kindergarten. Only because these days, kids are discovering things earlier & I'd rather my son know the truth, not some horribly incorrect version a friend tells him. Because they do THAT TOO. I didn't go into huge detail, but I did explain the difference between hetero & gay. I also asked him what mattered most, the type of person you want to date or the type of person that you ARE. I have several gay friends & they are some of the loveliest people I've ever known. I asked my son, "isn't that more important, that they're good, kind, loving people"? Doesn't that mean more than who they choose to love? He totally agreed & understood the concept, at 6 years old. Parents, you don't have to get into gory details/explanations to make a point or explain something. Simple is best.

You could also use your common sense & think, Percy's adventures have been getting darker as he gets older. The kids who started with the first series are in their teens now so heavier subject matter is to be expected. Plus the reading age is 10+ in the description.

I don't think Riordan is "jumping on the bandwagon", I think he's representing a sampling from all backgrounds. You have Caucasian, African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American, Latino, it's covered. Making Nico gay wasn't to be risqu, it was completing the tapestry of diversity Riordan is so accomplished at creating. I applaud him for it, my hat is off to you sir.

Parents- you need to remember that your children learn SO MUCH from YOU. Most importantly, TOLERANCE. Then understanding. If your afraid of this reveal of a story character being gay, you're telling your children that your afraid of gay people. A group that's done nothing to you. Your teaching your children to be afraid of it, to be un-accepting of it, to have no TOLERANCE or UNDERSTANDING. Not just of gay people either, this lesson could extend so much farther & deeper than you imagine. So don't teach it. Explain to your kids in a short, concise, matter of fact way what being gay IS & leave it at that. Don't teach them it's okay to be afraid of it or to shun people who are. That wrong on so many levels. Besides, wouldn't you rather your kids learn important things like this from YOU?

All in all I LOVED THIS BOOK. Can't wait for the next one! Bravo mr Riordan!!!! 5stars all the WAY!!!!!

Maci and Zoe's Review
By Maci and Zoe Read Books
This book is amazing! I had been looking forward to it since mark of Athena came out, it did not disappoint me. I could not put it down and read it in three days. I loved how the doors of death worked like an elevator. The book just kept on amazing me, it really makes you think about the characters. You learn something new about them with every page there was a huge surprise that I never ever would have expected. When I finished it and really thought about it, it made me sad to think about what had to happen. I even got a new favorite quote from it. Although it is at the end of the book so I can not say it. I really enjoyed reading this book and will truly miss the fun and diverse characters.

Tartarus is Terrifying
By Jo Michaels
I took my daughter to Barnes and Noble to get her some books for her birthday and saw The House of Hades on the table near the children's section. Of course, I grabbed it because I've been waiting for it to come out for a year. That cliffhanger at the end of Mark of Athena made me crazy and I was salivating to find out what Tartarus was like. Riordan really hit the nail on the head with that lead-in. Without blabbering anymore, here's my review!

From a reader's perspective:
I love Percy and Annabeth, Hazel and Frank, and Jason and Piper; but, my favorite character by far is Leo. For some reason, he and I click. I was so happy when he got shot off the Argo II and into oblivion in this book because what happened to him is something he's deserved for a long time. Making me care about a character is something I look for in any book I read. Riordan does a great job of helping me connect with these kids. I've read about them all for so long, they feel like friends. Pacing in this book was excellent and the tension was so high, I turned the page without even thinking about it. I blew through it in just over 24 hours. Gaea, one of my favorite goddesses, is becoming one of my least favorite. She has such an evil side! At times, I want to slap her earthy face. I loved the re-introduction of Bob. He provided much needed comic relief in times of extreme stress. World building was off the charts amazing and I felt like I was right there with the teens as they fought.

From an editor's perspective:
I found a number of dropped words in this book. This is something I'd expect to find more in non-traditionally published books. It threw me out of the story more than once. Other than that, the writing was spot on.

My rating:
+ 1 Star for awesome world building
+ 1 Star for making me laugh out loud
+ 1 Star for giving me characters I could care about
+ 1 Star for keeping me engaged and great pacing
+ .5 Star for writing
- .5 Star for so many dropped words.

Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars. Of course, I round up when clicking the stars on the review so this one will get a 5. Recommended to anyone who loves Mythology and is looking for a fantastic series.

This second edition has been revised and updated to include additional illustrations and two new chapters that examine improved street-tree planting techniques and the mechanisms for planning for trees in urban environments. The author questions Olmsted's well-known concept of bringing nature into the city, focusing instead on improving on nature through artful garden design. Throughout, the book's approach is to define the problem, establish the philosophical design basis, apply the design principle, and implement the planning and design.

From the Inside Flap
Trees in Urban Design Second Edition By Henry F. Arnold Reflecting the belief that urban life requires an "escape," city parks have long been designed in imitation of pastoral surroundings. Henry F. Arnold challenges this tired romantic style that disregards the urban environment—and shows how trees can be used to enhance urban elements rather than hide them. He encourages landscape architects and city planners to utilize trees, not as decoration, but as living building materials to create and reinforce urban spaces. The revised Second Edition adds practical value to the work, answering many of the questions that were raised as a result of the original volume. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, concentrates two new chapters on the more utilitarian issues of urban tree planting. Chapter Six deals substantively with the significant changes in urban tree-planting techniques that have evolved since the original edition was printed. Chapter Seven deals with the revolution in urban forestry that has taken place during this same period, the economics of urban tree planting, and the essential government role in this immensely important work. In this way, the book has become more instructive and, therefore, more useful as a source of information. After a brief historical sketch of urban tree use, Arnold takes a broad look at American cities and establishes a fresh design approach based on classical principles. In contrast to the scattered use of trees, he advocates the collective use of trees in groves, rows, and symmetrical units, and explains aesthetic principles used in grouping trees in a variety of settings. To emphasize the most important design considerations in choosing a type of tree, the branch structures of prototypical trees not in leaf are displayed in over 200 drawings and photographs. The same examples are repeated in a variety of contexts to demonstrate the effect of different design principles. The book explains why the science of plant ecology is of limited value in formulating rules for planting trees in cities. It clarifies the need to reevaluate the claims made for ecology in an urban context. Obstacles to effective tree plantings — such as municipal policies — are discussed, along with ways to change these obstacles into opportunities for better urban design and increased tree plantings. The book also suggests a realistic method of budgeting for tree planting and maintenance. Trees in Urban Design, Second Edition, provides bold, practical solutions to important problems of economics, planning, and maintenance of urban planting, and offers effective programs to raise urban tree management to its essential place in the urban megastructure. Reinforcing the view of the city as the nucleus of human culture, this "ground-breaking" book is essential reading for architects and city planners.

Essential reading for landscape architects and designers
By jacoblindsey
As a practicing urban designer, I reference this book on a weekly basis. It provides a clear and concise understanding of how trees perform in urban conditions, from conceptual use in spatial definition to planting details. Many of Arnold's ideas were revelations to me, even after five years of training in landscape architecture. Unfortunately, the volume is somewhat dated, especially in its notes on current cultivar disease resistance. Still, highly recommended.

This book was a revelation to me back in the '80s and has greatly influenced the advice I give to clients and what I teach my students.
It is a 'must-read'for all those responsible for planting trees and designing outdoor spaces in urban areas.

A good book for both beginners and pros. The only disadvantage is the small size of this book
If it was published in A4 size it would have been great,
I wish the publishers read this comment

Well organized, and good information on chords and which scales/modes are used for each palos and shows standard chord progressions for the palos.
Does not have all voicing for all chords (I imagine that would be impossible) but there are many.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1–5—In this first book of a new series, Lola is a second grader who loves sports, especially soccer. She also enjoys expressing her feelings by writing her diary. And she has a bratty little brother. Sound familiar? Her classmates think she is a tomboy, and the boys don't like to play games with her because she hurt a fellow classmate, Juan Gomez, by mistake. So now she is known as Mean Lola Levine. Lola is half Jewish and half Peruvian, and her favorite word is shalom—though it's a bit overused throughout the book. She deals with typical woes, such as worrying about how to survive in school, and she learns an important lesson about how words can hurt others. Her supportive family and best friend, Josh, help her cope. The writing style is typical of the genre: straightforward and predictable. Beginning chapter book readers will enjoy Lola's spunk and humor. Black-and-white illustrations are sprinkled throughout. VERDICT A good choice for chapter book collections.—Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TN

A multicultural successor to Judy Moody and Junie B. Jones
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: Dolores “Lola” Levine is an athletic second grader who loves playing soccer, writing in her diary, and hanging out with her best friend, Josh, who is also the school principal’s son. When she makes an aggressive play during a recess soccer game, a boy in her class gets hurt, and she is banned from playing soccer. Worst of all, some of the girls in her class start calling her Mean Lola Levine. After suffering a few days in silence, Lola confides in her family, and together they figure out a way for Lola to resolve her problems. 96 pages; grades 1-3.

Pros: With a Jewish father and Peruvian mother, Lola is a multicultural successor to Judy Moody and Junie B. Jones. She incorporates aspects of both cultures into her strong, feisty personality.

Cons: Not particularly groundbreaking entry into the early chapter book genre.

Nearly a thousand years after the birth of Christ, when all Europe fears that the world will soon end, an Irish monk, Brother Ciarn, discovers an ominous warning hidden in the illuminations of a religious tome. The cryptic prophecy speaks of Enoch's device, an angelic weapon with the power to prevent the coming apocalypse.

Pursued by Frankish soldiers and supernatural forces, Ciarn and his freethinking mentor, Brother Dnall, journey to the heart of France in search of the device. There, they rescue the Lady Alais from a heretic-hunting bishop who insists mankind must suffer for its sins. Together the trio races across Europe to locate the device, which has left clues of its passage through history. But time is running out, and if they don't find it soon, all that they love could perish at the End of Days.

Enoch's Device is a fast-paced medieval adventure steeped in history, mythology, and mysteries from a dark and magical past.

Hard to put down!
By KEP
Since historical fantasy fiction is not my typical genre, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when starting Enoch's Device. What I found was a thoroughly researched, fast paced, entertaining read!

From the first few pages, I was hooked. It starts out as a traditional historical fiction (because of the 10th century monks, it reminded me of "Pillars of the Earth"), but along with the main character, Ciaran, you soon realize that things are not always what they seem. Monks, Biblical mystery, myths and legends, and even a minor love storyline--this book really had it all!

It's a wonderful stand-alone novel, but also sets up for a sequel/series!

What are you waiting for, read this book!!!
By Tanjlisa Marie
Wow! What a wonderful ride!! Where to begin... First, the entire time I was reading the story I was also hoping that the author would separate fact from fiction at the end. And he did not disappoint. I love learning while reading a terrific book.

The characters in this mesmerizing historical fantasy were unforgettable! I just loved all the monks; some were evil, some were good, some were kooky, and some were brave. Brother Ciaran, the young monk whose point of view is one of the primary throughout the story, was quite believable and likeable. I didn't find one thing annoying about him. The emotions he felt were relevant to the whirlwind of events he experienced. The reader also gets the chance to watch Ciaran grow as the story unfolds.

There were several villains in this story, which is another reason why I enjoyed it so much. Multiple bad guys just multiply the fun!

The plot--flawless. Brother Ciaran and his assembled gang of unlikely cohorts are traveling around trying to find a device that will help save the world from meeting its end. The journey is peppered with not only people trying to kill them, but demons summoned to hunt them and kill them. Yikes! Each obstacle encountered was realistic because not everyone makes it out alive.

The flow of the story is another plus! There is something going on in every page and I just didn't want to stop reading until the action stopped. But the action never ceased so whenever I had to stop reading, I was in physical agony!!

A great read. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys getting lost in the fictional world, navigated by a superb author

Well paced, cleverly crafted and thoroughly enjoyable.
By Patrick de Moss
Finley's debut novel was a surprising delight. Sure, detailed, and well-wrought placed in a setting the Author has done his homework in, and it shows.

It was interesting to come to an apocalyptic book where the fears of the coming Patmosian encounter are some thousand years in our past. While I know that such fears have plagued man since the dawn of civilization, it was refreshing to hear voices from the distant past echoing our current fears, albeit in a slightly mythological and magical setting.

The twists and turns of plot, while necessary for any "thrilling page-turner" did not necessarily feel forced. Most grew naturally from the setting involved, and from the events at play. While I did debate some of the developments while reading, I knew that some were primarily FPS (for purposes of story).

My one critique rests somewhat squarely in one area. It is a small thing, but one that didn't help to attract notice, and it was in terms of the narrative only, separate from plot and character.
Descriptions of characters at times lapsed into a very quick form of emotive description, particularly the agents of the forces of darkness. Eyes that were "cruel", or "cunning" or "flashing", descriptions that give us trait-markers before the characters display any particular action that would show them as being cruel, or cunning, or any other marker. Being guilty of this myself, it's not much to take someone to task for, and to be honest did very little to detract from the pacing, however the shorthand must be noted.
As well, I would have loved to see a little more of the final battle at Brosse. There is a conflict in the faerie realm, and while it is well imagined, the struggles of men against men is also of prime importance to the text (since while the fae involved in this book are indeed involved in a primeval struggle, they do need agents of mortal flesh in order to work their will) and so I had hoped a little more of that mortal world struggle would make itself clear.

All told, however, I had a fine ride with this book. The philosophical musings and religious backdrop were well balanced with a bit of oomph and muscle and lots of running about. What "Enoch's Device" sets out to do - open a door of possibility and magic in a well researched historical setting - it does very well. I am curious to see where Finley takes us next in the twists and turns of the "Dark Ages", and look forward to his next work. A wonderful debut from a writer I will be looking forward to hearing from again.
